Your thoughts on the new Private forum?

You've managed to get by for the last few years without the private forum, so I'm sure you can still survive now. If you really do have something relevant to say to a specific thread in the private forum you could always make an equivalent thread outside it (and some of them already exist such as comm discussion, renaming of stuff).

By that logic, the private forum is unnecessary.

I've been a member on a board for a few weeks and I just hit 20 karma, which allows me to post more, and make more threads. The next karma level, 50, invites me into the private forum. Also at 20 you can report posts.
I'm liking this system, and a users' karma is open for everyone to see. If you reach negative karma you are either reported or banned (not sure).
Any thoughts on an implication of karma? And like how we have, the top posters list (post count), that doesn't seem to convey anything, as some people on there, including me, who aren't in the private forum. Instead on this forum, there's a top karma list, which people aim for.

Edit: also, you can't give out karma until you have 20.

So is this happening right now, or is this a suggestion?

edit: just read stachu's post

We've thought about karma for a long time now.
Once this wave of newness gets over with, maybe we'll deal with that idea for the 10th time. :)

Yes, I know, I remember arguing about it about a year ago. I remember a problem is they thought people would make new accounts to give out negative karma to people they hate, or positive to themselves. That's why that forum, you can't give out karma until you reach 20.

So let's just make it really private, with outsiders not being able to read. Problem solved.

And after the insiders are done with a topic, it could still be released into the wild (moved to a normal subforum) for everybody to read and discuss.

That is a good idea, however until something like that is implimented, it shall continue to be annoying.

Personally I think the private forum is flawed but I lurk mostly so It doesn't bother me. Tim Major is going in the right direction with the karma in my opinion. It's biased otherwise.

Many of the knowledgeable members have been posting a lot less lately.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that many "potentially good" threads no longer convey their points of view efficiently. The essence of what they're trying to get across to the rest of us is gradually being diluted. This new sub forum basically gives those capable of enriching cubing and it's future, a place where they can make themselves heard without the noise. And lets face it; they should be able to make themselves heard. We should be honest with ourselves here; would it really be in our interests as cubers to let those particular members go because they're fed up? At the end of the day this is something that has been a long time in the making. I'm happy that a potential solution is at hand and feel that all of us should just give it time.

And it has been stated enough; everybody can join the club, you just need to work on your posts.

We'll be fine ;) Now...all of you get over here for a group hug! Yes, you too ;)

I would have to agree with this. I haven't been very active as of late but I still come to read on a daily basis. Although I've only been a member of this forum a very short time, the point of my joining was to try and learn and hopefully make some friends in the process. It would be nice to be able to read a thread minus a lot of the nonsense that tends to accompany many of them. Mind you I'm sure I'm guilty of contributing nothing to a thread but at least that won't/shouldn't be possible if the posters are "screened", so-to-speak. It will make the thread flow better and make for an easier read as a whole. Just my two cents.

after reading through all 12 pages again something continuously popped into mind..... this is like that story where there are the cool people(the members of the private forum in this case) and the people who cant play with them because they aren't "cool" enough. which is classed as bullying or inequality i suppose more than bullying. being "cool" is something that you either are or are not being smart(posting quality) is similar because everybody has their own personal limits on how sart they can be therefore making it almost impossible for some people to be in the private forums. so really isn't it a case of inequality?

(I'm defensive)
I don't like the private forum not because I'm not cool. Stop assuming.
I don't like it because it is wrong (at least for me)
(and I think we are on the same side)

anyway, the administrator already read what we want them to know, I think it is time to stop and just go on with what they have decided.

But I like being able to see the discussion ;_;

This is like the 5th time you've said you were done :p

Certainly not. Everyone will have the opportunity to get in. Give us a few days to get a request form setup.

I was thinking about that, but in all honesty, who would do that every time they want to contribute? I'd much rather just be able to post there myself. Me having to PM first, gives the impression of "hey, run the idea through me first, and if it is acceptable I'll go ahead and post it."

Treats us as if we are incapable of recognizing what good posts are.
Do this in the regular forum for now, and then request to get in. If you continuously help people in a positive way here, you are welcome to be here. Keep in mind that even though the private forum is created, we still expect people across the entire forum to be mature and post only when they have something of value to add. We will still be enforcing the rules throughout the forum as we have before.

I, personally, like it a lot. Even if I'm not posting in it, I really enjoy reading threads in the private forum, knowing that they will be free of noise. Simply put, the general quality of posts is better, and the discussion is more interesting.

Although, I acknowledge that the rest of the forum could definitely suffer as a result. From the perspective of a member, if I had an idea for a thread, I don't really see a reason to post it in the 'regular' forum. If this comes to be, I hope that the private forum be dismissed.

I sure hope that I'm wrong, though
Why not post in the "regular" forum? Just because people have access to the private forum doesn't mean they won't use the rest of the forum. In fact, the private forum will likely be quite small (in terms of posts) compared to the rest of the forum

i think this forum should have a "hide post by" button or "hide this members post" button that you could hit and if you did want to see that members post then you could click it again and the post would show up again so i could filter out an annoying members post
or a "hide this post" like on YT but they have report as spam instead and even then comments with alot of thumbs down are always hidden so we should have that here and the limit would be like 5 thumbs down and your post would be hidden or the first 5 words would show up the the rest wouldnt un less you clicked to see more.
just my little comments
This would be easier said than done to implement, and wouldn't really solve the problem.

We could do this, but having it as public read-only allows anyone to read the information posted there (which could be helpful), and also hopefully sets by example. We are looking to improve the post quality here, and this forum provides a bit of incentive to only post when you have something of value to add.

Expect an announcement within a few days with a request form for users who are interested in joining the discussions in the private forum.

Where's Jorghi?

I know this is why I'm not in the list LOL

Try posting better if possible. It could get you on the list although me saying that is ironic because I myself am not on the list but I have been trying to post better when I am on.

PLEASE LET ME ON THAT LIST!!!!! I WILL DO ANYTHING!!! ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a good idea. It gives a place to go for high caliber discussions. However, I feel that the private forum will also stultify those who don't post as frequently as others.

I think, instead of just having people who can post in the private forum, a system of review should be put in place. Everyone can write a reply to a thread, but only those who have invited will have their post immediately placed on the thread. The rest will be sent to someone for review--not sure the practicality of this. Perhaps moderators can take turns reviewing. Constructive posts or posts furthering the discussion would be approved and put into the thread. Then the next time the person tries to post in the private forum it could tell the moderator or whoever that they have already had one post approved. After x number of posts approved they can post without review in the forum.

Obvious flaws are that this system I suggest will have posts in places where they seem to not be relevant because of the time it takes for them to be approved. Also there is the flaw that there may be a lot of posts and thus a lot of posts needing review that may overwhelm whoever is reading them.

The private forums might as well be scrapped all together if they they're going to do it that way

not close to the 5th time..
and sorry.. just had a bad day.

Yeah dude I get those too
Listen to more music :D Or read a good book in a hot bath :O

...I haven't been posting here much lately, because I'm busy. Here's what the private forum suggest: The quality of these forums is degrading.

Why? Who?

I'll tell you who. It's not the newbies who've only been here for a few months. It's the people who are constantly complaining about it and probably read over and proof read their posts 10 times and post with peer (ish) pressure, probably afraid that someone will say their wrong about something and they'll lose the reputation of being smart and a contributor to the community.

Those people, almost all in the private forum (but not all in private forum are those people) afd the ones who I think changed this forum for the worse. I honestly haven't seen any good discussions or any good helping of beginners lately. The feel of the forum has lost its touch, and it just isn't what it used to be. Whenever I visit this site, I see posts like that, and it's just a huge turnoff.
