Your thoughts on the new Private forum?

Why would they care about the public forum if the private one is supposedly better.
If I offered you a Ferrari or a transit van, you would go nowhere near the transit van.
Let's look at the facts. Since the private forum was formed, I've posted 3 times in the private and 3 times in the public, and that's not including this public thread. That's proof that we won't ignore the public forum. The public forum still has plenty to offer, so stop worrying that all the noobs will be left to hopelessly fend for themselves (no I'm not saying that everyone in the public forum is a noob)

Yeah, you know what.... I've decided that the private forum kind of sucks. I know the point of it was to try and get more people to be constructive, but what it seems to be doing is just making everyone try and be someone they're not. More and more people are just trying too hard to sound like authority figures by telling people what to do (post this in so and so thread, please don't do this, etc) and it's just fake. I just feel like it's starting to become more like a cult with all these rules and it being taken a little TOO seriously. Sure, it's nice to have some good information to be able to find once in a while, when you need it, but at the same time, it's like some people are forgetting that it IS just the internet, it IS just a forum ( a place where people should be able to talk and have fun as well as learn) and it IS just a place where we should all be treated as equals and adults (even those that are young). Just because someone is faster and knows more doesn't necessarily make them better, smarter, or more deserving of being considered more "important" than anyone else. It's like having a class full of kids where no one is allowed to talk, but "Justin" and "Brian" can talk because they get straight A's, etc. I hope you all know what I'm trying to say. I basically think we should all just chill out and try to enjoy the fact that we're all alive and able to have such a cool hobby like cubing, without being so uptight all the time, yelling at people that don't know what they're doing because they're new or whatever, punishing someone because they give a "silly" reply to something. Just learn to have fun and accept that everyone is different and stop separating everyone because some people are "cooler" than others, or friends with certain people (which you all know damn well that that's a big part of what's going on here). It's only about keeping things organized to a certain extent and you can say I'm wrong all you want, but I strongly see otherwise, and know I'm not the only one. I guess to conclude... It was started, knowing that people would take offense to it if they weren't added, etc. It's almost like it's a test to see how people react to it. See if people don't feel "important" enough, or whatever. Now everyone is trying to act cool to prove themselves worthy, and really, it's just silly.

I know that it seems like exclusion for no good reason, but remember exclusion is EVERYWHERE on the internet as well as in real life, and sometimes that's the way it works best. For example, 'Why am I not allowed to edit this page on Wikipedia?' Well they've decided it's best if it's limited to fewer people. And I don't think many people see a problem with that because most people are willing to accept that some people are better qualified than others to do certain things.

Many people in the private forum are friends with each other, but cause and effect is a little hazy here - a lot of cubing friendships are forged after finding mutual respect for each other, and this comes through quality posting and knowledge of cubing.

I think too many people see this as certain members wanting to show that they're better than everyone by creating exclusive rights for them and their friends. It's really not that way at all.

To be honest I am already seeing the effect of the private forum. Where? This thread. It's open to the public, but I am yet to see much clutter or noise at all. I have seen much more quality posts from people who have in the past typed mistake ridden posts or completely off-topic one liners.

Thats the point to an extent. Its an attempt to create a forum where people can have discussion without the cluttering, and most times inevitable, relatively useless posts getting in the way of the actual discussions. If people start putting more effort into their posts and not things like +1, I agree etc. then they will eventually be able to be part of the forum and thats one more person whos a better contributor because of this new incentive.

More and more people are just trying too hard to sound like authority figures by telling people what to do (post this in so and so thread, please don't do this, etc) and it's just fake. I just feel like it's starting to become more like a cult with all these rules and it being taken a little TOO seriously.

I havnt really experienced any of this, in fact the only people who are posing as authority figures, are generally the actual authority figures. Sure there are going to be those few who tell others off, or try to be more like Stefan/Thom, but generally they are just jerks, and dont provide any useful information, and are fairly easy to ignore.

Sure, it's nice to have some good information to be able to find once in a while, when you need it, but at the same time, it's like some people are forgetting that it IS just the internet, it IS just a forum ( a place where people should be able to talk and have fun as well as learn) and it IS just a place where we should all be treated as equals and adults (even those that are young).
.

I feel like this is where your main issue with everything is.
Sure you can look at this as 'just another forum' but generally this used to be a place where you would go to research a bunch of information (among other sites out there dedicated to cubing methods) as well as be able to come up with new ideas, and have interesting discussions about them, and every now and then you would see a joke thread, or a thread that had nothing relevant in it, but for the most part it was a very informative website.

Now its almost switched, all the good, thought provoking threads seem to drown in all the 'noise' of the forums.

As for people treating everyone like an adult, if you dont act like an adult, then no one should treat you like an adult.

Just because someone is faster and knows more doesn't necessarily make them better, smarter, or more deserving of being considered more "important" than anyone else.

Generally those that are faster do know more, thats why they are faster. (im not saying this is always the case at all) But, in general faster cubers have more to contribute, especially in regards to the improvement of the community.

I basically think we should all just chill out and try to enjoy the fact that we're all alive and able to have such a cool hobby like cubing, without being so uptight all the time, yelling at people that don't know what they're doing because they're new or whatever, punishing someone because they give a "silly" reply to something.

Most of the time, no one yells or even gets upset at the newbies. When I first got on here everyone was fairly helpful. And they still are. People get mad when the newbies come on here, and act like they know everything/blatantly lie to everyone or are just a nuisance. And at that point its not about being a jerk so much as trying to better the community.

Just learn to have fun and accept that everyone is different and stop separating everyone because some people are "cooler" than others, or friends with certain people (which you all know damn well that that's a big part of what's going on here).

The separation isnt really about whos cooler or whos faster. like I said earlier, its about those who can contribute to the discussion and not clutter the thread with useless information. Think of this as the anti-thesis of the off-topic sub-forum.

It's only about keeping things organized to a certain extent and you can say I'm wrong all you want, but I strongly see otherwise, and know I'm not the only one.

Its completely about keeping relevant and complex discussion organized, as well as an incentive to post better quality posts.

mo·ron (môrn, mr-)
n.
1. A stupid person; a dolt.
2. Psychology A person of mild mental retardation having a mental age of from 7 to 12 years and generally having communication and social skills enabling some degree of academic or vocational education. The term belongs to a classification system no longer in use and is now considered offensive.

I think I am neither. And you do not know me.

So young and innocent and naive. How cute <3

the more i read of this the ore i'm starting to like the idea(strangely). Although as someone said the one bad thing is its putting a "mask" on some peoples personalities because they are not responding to people in the regular manner in which they would normally , i suppose this case can be fought from both negative and positive sides.

As stated before, I strongly think that this is kind of getting ridiculous. People should not get upset over this. Plus, they think that the only way to be recognized is that they need to mask their personality. I call for something to be changed. I can't see much good coming from this (Besides high-quality threads).

It's like having a class full of kids where no one is allowed to talk, but "Justin" and "Brian" can talk because they get straight A's, etc.

It's exactly like that, but in a different perspective, it's fair. "Justin" and "Brian" earned the ability to be able to talk, as people who can post can earn the ability to post in the new forum section.

Try posting better if possible. It could get you on the list although me saying that is ironic because I myself am not on the list but I have been trying to post better when I am on.

PLEASE LET ME ON THAT LIST!!!!! I WILL DO ANYTHING!!! ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is that I don't want to be on the list xD

We're not owed anything on this forum. Being a member here is a privilege not a right etc.
Why is it a big deal that certain members get to post in a section?

Was there this much uproar about premium memberships? Some of you are too sensitive

hey man, let me reply again please? :)

it is a big deal because the people that are qualified in the private section are also regular members just like the other regular members that are not in the private forum.
And the members that will qualify there must be judged accordingly to the judgment of the moderator there. (i know, still based on their past posts, but still)
and the other members must prove first their worth if they can join there.

but watching this thread (and reading in the private forum) helps me to understand the worth of the private forum.
I understand that private forum is really really helpful and it is for the good cause of EVERYBODY.
But I believe there is still something wrong with it
(maybe because of the part of being "judged")

argh! i really wanted to stop replying to this thread. sorry
maybe i should stop watching this thread. :)

an idea (maybe not good idea though):
how about standardization of who will be in that private forum and who will be not.
like a council that will choose members.
(is "council" the right word? sorry) lol

peace to everybody :)

I'd love to!
The problem is coming up with a standard and measuring users by it.

Feel free to try to create such a standard. Please.

got your point. really hard. :)
told ya it is not a good idea. :D

edit:
*these are what on my mind:
- examination (not theoretical)(in essay) for the members who will apply for the private forum. (includes much effort for the administrator) (i also think this is a bad idea, I think there will be many flaws)
- or, a certain group of unbiased people who will choose members, which will discuss to each other first with a standard basis (again, what standard?)

*the qualified members will not be a "member"(under the name on the left, what do we call that?)
*i disagree with making the private forum invisible and will be visible if the topic is done. we still want to observe.
*must have a summary of result of the finished topic

and when would be a topic considered finished? I believe most of the threads are left unfinished and undecided just like this
http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?32571-Relays-Inspection-Time
http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/s...a-beginner-start-with-the-best-cube-available
is there a standard rule?

oh well, I know these maybe not a great idea for you(all), but I put effort to this so please don't be mean to me, :)

Also, being a premium member means you want to help keep the site running. Websites take time and money to manage. Make sure you don't forget this people

This is nearly the worst idea in this thread.
People cannot buy their way into intelligence.

I'd love to hear what you think is worse then this (really).

I honestly thought that it was a half way decent idea from a business perspective and also usually the people who want to keep the site going tend to have some knowledge. You say that people cannot buy their way into intelligence, but if 'these' people bought into intelligence, then their first post would be erased because they aren't intelligent enough to be in the private forum.

I don't know how the application form for the private forum is set up, but I think that premium members probably already have some knowledge or else they wouldn't want to support this site. So I would have to go ahead and support this idea even though it may be a little corrupted.
