These Forums are Becoming Awful

Also, we do infract people for being jerks. I'd say 3/4 of the infractions I've given out so far were for jerks being jerks.

I think the problem is, is that people are too afraid to hit the "report post" button. I try to hit it when I see something bad or stupid. How many reports do you get a day? Do you think that is close to all of them?

Remind people how to use the report post button, that would be nice, because too many people get personal attacks by other users.

Note how some of the responses in this thread are only furthering the OPs point. ):

OMG URE SO STUPIT NO ONE CARES MAN.

;)

On Topic: I agree with Bob and David on the Nats 2013 thread. I really think that people need to stop posting ideas that obviously aren't going to be chosen. Look at where Nationals has been held in the past. Have there been any pre-K schools/middle schools/churches?
All in all, people for the most part are kind of getting what the deserve. If you can't read the guidelines for the forum/thread, then don't.

Other than reporting posts that break the rules of speedsolving, there isn't really much I can think of that you can do personally. However, people should make an individual effort to contribute helpful information, and just be a good citizen.

There may be somebody, or something that you don't agree with in the forum. That's just life, regardless of whether it's the internet or not. To all the people on speedsolving (brony or other), tolerate and love.

What exactly are people getting if their post is reported? A warning? A permanent ban? A temporary ban? It probably says it somewhere on the forums, but I'm curious.

9 post in the past 24 hours
doesnt seem like alot to me considering all the post every day
but the nationals 2013 thread is for people to talk about nationals 2013
if you dont let people post their suggestions or opinoins then MAKE ANOTHER THREAD
its that easy just a thread called"US Nationals Comment Thread" can probably make all the people who flame other people for posting a stupid place stop flaming. so anyone wanna flame me for my opinion? or give me an infraction for no reason?? come on i know you want to

And that gives him permission to be completely and utterly rude how...?

I'd like to point out that the members which are usually cast out as "immune" to infractions/bans are very rarely reported.

depends. Usually an infraction.

Depends greatly. I am usually very heavy with my infractions which often results in quite a few temporary bans. Even today gave out a 5 point infraction(1 day ban). In the past week the longest ban I gave out was a 3 week ban. Both of these were seen by me through a reported post. This is why I stress that reporting posts are so important. During the last week we've gotten about 5,600 posts it's impossible for moderators to get to every single one of those posts. We do get to every single reported post, however.

The current condition of SpeedSolving is terrible. It has gone from a place of information and for people seeking help to putting others down and, oftentimes, trolling.

A lot of cubers tend to think too highly of themselves. It may be from being popular on YouTube, being well-known on the forum, or doing something most other people haven't done. In any case, they all share one thing in common: They are full of it.

Now, if you are one of those things I had mentioned above but you are still humble (I won't name who is and isn't), then I commend you, as it is a little difficult to be. I myself can't help being a jerk sometimes.

This leads me to my next topic: how we treat each other. I've seen some really vicious behavior go on between members here. Here's something I saw on the US Nationals 2013 thread:

Now, how is this kind and courteous in any way? It's just rude and sarcastic. What should've been said was something along the lines of, "Wow, that's fantastic that that school is supportive of cubing. Although, this isn't really what the WCA delegates are looking for, as they want a large venue, such as a University. Also, from what I can tell, this seems to count as your backyard, and that isn't what the WCA is looking for either. But thanks for the suggestion!"

See what I mean? Like the Golden Rule says, "Treat others like you want them to treat you". anyway, please act more civilized and be nice to one another.

Hope this gets better,

-Ian
I do appreciate your opinion. Do you have any suggestions to make it become better?

We've been dealing with the degrading quality issue for several years now. It is a very difficult issue to resolve without ruining it for any future members (for example, we considered shutting off all new registrations and slowly weeding out people who cause trouble - this would work, but would prohibit any new cubers from getting involved). We tried many, many things, and also discuss new ideas quite often. One thing that was suggested awhile back but never implemented was a welcome video which shows new users around the site. Even though this hasn't been created, there are welcome PM's sent to all new members with links to various pages throughout the site and also what to do and not to do. Aside from that, we deal with every reported post and also try to moderate as many of the new posts on a daily basis.

I'd be interested in hearing any suggestions you may have. Thanks.

Maybe a minimum post limit to start threads?

I can't stress enough that people need to report posts more if they think that the forum quality is degrading. If you don't like the content of a post, then report it. As other mods have said, we can't read every post on this forum, but we do read every reported post.

Maybe a minimum post limit to start threads?

This is suggested often, and is always met with the same response:
1. It does happen that a lurker's first post will be a very good one, actually worthy of its own thread.
2. Just because someone has a high post count doesn't mean they suddenly have good judgement on when to make threads.

Maybe a minimum post limit to start threads?

Not a great idea, I'm afraid. Not every new comer to this forum is dumb. Some generally have good ideas and it'd be a waste to make them wait to make a thread over something like that.

People don't mind when new people make a thread. They mind when it's stupid or when it's something searchable, or they use the wrong thread.
