What are some good cubes?

well alot of people seem to have gotton off topic, so im just going to be bold and tell you to get this cube IF YOU ARE OK WITH SWITCHING TO A WHITE CUBE!!! http://lightake.com/detail.do/sku.3x3x3_YJ_FinHop_Magic_Cube_White_(Competion_Edition)-28868 , if not,http://lightake.com/detail.do/sku.3x3x3_Type_C_Full_Sealed_Magic_Cube_Black_-27438 ... if you can though i recommend that you get the first of the two

I have heard those cubes suck.

Seriously, get an AV, F or a GH.

I have recently progressed past the beginners stage and it was the Dayan GuHong 3x3 Speed Cube 6-Color Stickerless that did the trick. I respectfully disagree with the notion that one must pass a certain time threshold before investing in quality cube. I got a late start on the hobby (I'm 51) and have arthritis in my right hand and wrist from a motorcycle accident. Trying to crank on the store bought cube actually caused physical pain. Having the stickers get all gunked up didn't help matters. Right out of the box the Dayan was so smooth that faster moves seemed to suggest themselves. I haven't lubed it yet but have made some minor adjustments by popping off the center caps and turning the screws a bit. This cube seems to reveal it's true potential as I get better and start testing out different finger tricks and solutions. It's not only painless, it's actually therapeutic. So I'd say, yeah - go for it.

Yes but the OP is very likely between the age of 10-14 and I highly doubt has arthritis. I have not heard of anyone getting arthritis from cubing. Most kids want to go as fast as they can, if this guy gets a guhong or something like that, it will be uncontable and will likely pop alot on him.

I know for a fact some store boughts will never be good. Get something now.
My vote is Edison. speedcubeshop.com has them. It's like a store bought but turns well. It gets even better over time.

If you go the Dayan route I'd recommend ZhanCHi over Guhong. They feel VERY similar but the ZhanChi pops less.

My first speed cube was F I. I hated it. Go FII if you get an F type. FII gets worse over time. I haven't tried FIII and probably won't bother.

I don't understand where everyone gets the deteriorating FII theory from. Mine's pretty old and I'd say it's probably better than when I got it.

And, if any cube, I disagree about the Edison. I can't say I've had one before, but I don't think $20 is reasonable for a first DIY...

Ouch, A little bit off on the age >.<. I'm 17, but I probably do come off as younger online considering how bad my spelling, grammar, etc is...

- anyway thanks everyone for their input so far :D

AGHH! I'm not sure what is more annoying, people who didn't read the OP's posts and recommend that he should find cubing frustrating, or the people suggesting he should waste his money on mediocre cubes that he'll most likely want to replace in a few months. There aren't cubes for beginners, cubes for intermediates and cubes for advanced cubers... there are just good cubes and bad cubes. (Thank gawd Robert brought some sense to this thread).

cw93, you're lucky with this hobby that the best cubes cost barely anything more than the cheapest rubbish. There is a "what cube should I buy thread" if you have a wee look over it you'll see most people recommend the Dayan Guhong, or the new Dayan ZhanChi (nobody on that thread is recommending Edisons or F1s).

The thing with Dayan cubes is they have a different mechanism inside from other 3x3's which means they turn really well, and lock up considerably less than other cubes.
If you can afford it, buying one from Lubix will be modded/lubed/tensioned to make it really good (they have a money back guarantee), although if you want to get it from somewhere else be sure to buy some nice liquid lubricant like Lubix (or Maru lube which is cheaper).

Happy cubing.

You should wait till you're at least sub 20 before you get a speed cube. Until then, I suggest using this 3x3x3. It's also a really good cube for OH.

Lol b4p4076... A 10x10x10 cm 3x3? WTFBBQ?

Anyway, On the original post...

I really don't understand people saying stuff like 'Wait until you're sub 1 min before getting a speed cube' or 'just work in your store bought more'
In my opinion those are things that're funner to do once you're good at cubing... I myself might later buy an actual storebought and make it good just by solving it heaps... But my first cube was a speed cube and my first solve with it was around 1:15, I was sub 1 min in a few days with it... So I STRONGLY reccommend just buying a speed cube. Guhongs go for like $10-12 online, as do most other speed cubes... Storebought rubik's cubes cost $30 in stores near me... The better cubes are cheaper! Why not get one... There's honestly no reason in the world it'd be better to get a rubik's over a guhong when you're beginning even... So yeah... Buy a speed cube. My recommendations would be --> ZhanChi, Guhong, FII, Alpha-CC, Lingyun, Linhui etc etc... Any good speed cube.

We are just jealous because us people who started in 2009 or before had to use sh*t cubes. My first speedcube was Cube4you... fun...

telling somebody to wait until they are sub 20-30 before getting a speedcube is a terrible suggestion....it's like telling somebody to have a sub 11 on a 100 meter dash before buying a good pair of track shoes. getting a cube that turns better will not make a cuber worse off (even if it is a beginner) the uncontrollability (word?) of lets say a guhong or zhanchi (or any speedcube for that matter) can easily get there tensions adjusted to a tighter setting, so that the cuber can still have solves that are smooth and don't lock up, yet not have it be too loose where it becomes uncontrollable.

hope my 2 cents are of any value...

I you are looking for a new different challenge and a good cube, you might try V-cube's flag cubes. They are not as easy as they look and don't listen to those who say they are just marketing or V-cubes with fancy colours. They are real difficult challenges in their own right and worth every penny you pay for them. I have just finished a three coloured V-cube 6 flag cube (French flag) and it has to be the most difficult cube I have ever solved, including V-cubes 7, Dazzler and Illusion.

I didn't read the whole trhead but why do you have to be sub40 before getting a good cube? sounds ridiculous to me
you have to get pro as fast as you can in my opinion
