What are some good cubes?

Hi,

I learned how to do the Rubik's cube just a few weeks ago and my time is improving slowly. Problem is the cube I'm using gets stuck all the time, and is just in bad shape (was probably in my room for like 10 years! =D). Does anyone have any recommendations on a good cube? Would I have to lube it with something?

thanks.

(oops, I think this might belong in the Hardware section)

If you've only been cubing a few weeks, you might be fine with a storebought, but if you want to get a speedcube, I'd recommend the Dayan guhong.

No, you dont get a really fast speed cube if you JUST started you should get a slower cube so you dont have expectations for all cubes to be amazingly fast. I had to start off with a cube4you speedcube and those suck.

Just continue with a store-bought if you've been cubing for only less than a month, but if you want a new cube I would recommend a lubix zhanchi which will last a long time from lubixcubes.com. A new cube won't neccesarilly make you that much faster but it will make solving more comfortably.

So the 'ultimate lubix xhanchi' is what you recommend?

I just want a cube that will turn smoothly and not get stuck so often. My cube is starting to really annoy me. Also, would I have to lube it?

Emulover: Both are okay, I did say he should stick to the storebought for a bit, but getting a DIY wouldn't hurt, in fact, it would probably help.

well the cube I recommended comes lubed and modified and it is amazing out of the box however im worried that it might be too big of a jump that is unnecessary. I heard the zhanchi is quite fast so you might want to opt for something else.

Is there any good places where I can buy a "storebought" cube online? It would just be easier for me to buy one online then at the store currently. Also, do you have any recommendations for non-speedcubes? I just want to make sure I make a decent choice, even if it's just a non speed cube I want it to be decent.

Also, this is the one I'm using now and would prefer to have a different kind. http://www.amazon.com/Winning-Moves-5025-Rubiks-Cube/dp/B00081RYNC

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well.

What makes you think you need a new cube and that you shouldn't make your current one better? Save your money and spend time solving your cube and it'll get better.

I solved my cube plenty of times and it doesn't seem to be getting better... In fact, it seems to be getting worse. Almost every solve I have to spend a few seconds fixing it, or sometimes even turning it the opposite way that I want to because it would be too stiff one way (instead of 1 turn clockwise I could have to do 3 counterclockwise) and I definitely shouldn't have to do that. Also, I looked at guides and I just cant seem to get this cube to open so spraying it with something isn't going to happen, and to make it worse most of the stickers are falling off and the blue center pieces is missing. So yeah, the cube is pretty much junk now.

Good answer. I now agree that you need a new one. maybe look into getting a type F to start you out. it is a speed cube but think you might be able to handle it.

I decided I wanted a Lubix Elite, just kidding :D.

hmm after looking at reviews of the types I'm kinda leaning towards type F, but still not sure. have any links to good sites to buy them? Also, I heard a lot about the caps popping out... is that a problem?

I love my Elite, but you are not ready for it. The caps aren't a big deal cuz you can just super glue them if you really need to, the glue won't affect the puzzle's integrity at all if you are concerned about that. I would suggest speedcubeshop, cubedepot, or icubemart. not trying to promote anyone here...just suggesting

buy some CRC and lube your storebought, it will get 100% better

after that buy like an AV or a GHII or something like that. with minimal work (just CRC) they will both be great cubes. the f2 takes more work (restickering, gluing on caps) to make it worth it

But I've heard that it pops a lot, and I don't really think he wants that.

A first speedcube (in my opinion) shouldn't be the most amazing cube you can find. I would suggest starting with a cube that's "okay", because it wil definitely be much better than your storebought, but there will still be better cubes out there to "upgrade." My first speedcube was a Ghost Hand II, and to me it was the most amazing cube out there (mostly because I was used to a storebought).

I wouldn't recommend getting the best cube out there, nor do I recommend getting a new cube until a little later. If you want to make your storebought a little faster, look around your garage or shed for some kind of silicone spray, like CRC, JigaLoo, or whatever else works. Once you can get your times down to something a little better than what you average now, I would suggest sticking with your storebought. If you've only been cubing for a few weeks, a little more practice could probably still help you improve a lot before you get a new cube.

Then again, I'm not really sure if you have a "good" storebought or a really crappy one.

Buy One!

I have recently progressed past the beginners stage and it was the Dayan GuHong 3x3 Speed Cube 6-Color Stickerless that did the trick. I respectfully disagree with the notion that one must pass a certain time threshold before investing in quality cube. I got a late start on the hobby (I'm 51) and have arthritis in my right hand and wrist from a motorcycle accident. Trying to crank on the store bought cube actually caused physical pain. Having the stickers get all gunked up didn't help matters. Right out of the box the Dayan was so smooth that faster moves seemed to suggest themselves. I haven't lubed it yet but have made some minor adjustments by popping off the center caps and turning the screws a bit. This cube seems to reveal it's true potential as I get better and start testing out different finger tricks and solutions. It's not only painless, it's actually therapeutic. So I'd say, yeah - go for it.
