Who's solved the cube without instructions?

Best I could do was first layer and some edges on the second layer, searching for the way to put the other edges in, I found that someone else had figured out how the same way I did and some more. I want to learn 2x2x2 by myself though.

I DID YAY lol...
No really, I learnt commutators by myself, and other than the commutators, I only used one alg that really took a while figure out (alteast an hour) (the CCW edge cycle...still my fav PLL xD) The only thing is that it took about 7~10 min to solve a single cube.
And I figured how to solve it either when I was 10 or early 11, but didn't care for it much, so I just started SPEEDCUBING over a year after I solved it for the first time.

I like the level of understanding I went into by doing it.

The only thing I lost is bragging rights.

I feel the same way. With block building method, you get into knowing the cube rather than just spitting back algs.

I did not learn to solve the cube by myself. I read about commutators from Ryan Hiese which helped me solve the cube by just cycling pieces to solve

i learned my own algorithms.. although it took me one week to discover the last missing algorithm..
but with my own algorithms, i did a sub 50...

i also solved my 4x4x4 without tutorials or help from any person or website.. (i can't if there are parities)

I figured out the 3x3 by myself in 1980 over a weekend of frustration. Soon I was averaging 2 hours per solve, then after a few days, 20 minutes per solve. Then I learned great stuff from David Singmaster's booklet to get my time down further. On my own I also figured out the 2x2, 4x4 and larger cubes, Impossiball, Alexander's Star, Square-1, Magic, Megaminx, Gigaminx, Pyraminx Crystal, 3x3x4, void cube, mirror block cube. The only (minor) help I got was when I heard the Megaminx could be attacked with 3x3 algorithms -- and that was enough for me to figure it out. I haven't been stumped by a twisty puzzle yet.

Dang...you even made your own parity algs?

I solved without help the 3^3 in 1981 and the 4^3 the followng year. At that time I had no choice anyway, there were no published methods I knew of and nobody I knew who was able to solve them. But now I have conitnued to try o solve all puzzles by myself; the one which caused me the most trouble was square-1 (and I miust confess that I first looked at the French cubing website for the parity alg, but I found the alg given there really horrible and finally decided to use a more intuitive one I found on my own.)

I never solved the 3x3 by myself... or many other puzzles.

I solved a 3x3x4 by myself (after learning Domino off the internet and from myself).

I also solved a Super Square-1 myself after learning normal Square-1.

Other than that, nothing. I have adapted methods for other puzzles, but never really invented my own. :(

I myself solved in a single day without any help. The cube belonged to my sister. Nobody is obliged to believe me.

The first who said that our planet was round has passed for a madman. People say I have no sense with my video. The world should see my originality has brought back the cube on the planet (search rubiks99 on youtube ).

ElectricDoodie, I don't understand your confusion. This is probably the single most coherent post Gaétan has ever made here. It actually entirely makes sense AND is on topic. In fact, his surprisingly coherent post makes me want to attempt what others think might be impossible (if you know me, you know I can never resist a challenge, no matter how difficult). So, at the risk of being incredibly foolish, here goes:

Gaétan, if you happen to read this, it would be wonderful if you would actually converse with us. Your method for 2x2x2 clearly demonstrates that you are brilliant, and considering I solved the cube in about 2 weeks without any help and you are easily 14 times smarter than me, I have no doubt you could have done it in a single day. And I do admire your ability to solve a cube blindfolded long before most other people were doing it.

Are you still cubing, and if so, what are you interested in these days? Could we perhaps interest you in attending a competition someday, so some of us might be able to meet you?

Yes. They were ugly but they worked. For the 4x4 (and all larger cubes) I discovered a PLL parity sequence fairly quickly ( l2 U2 l2 Uw2 l2 u2 ) (note I developed a preference for L moves while holding the cube in my right hand). To do the OLL parity fix, I did "l", then fixed up the centers relative to the edges, then solved the edges. I was so excited when I figured out that mystery! For the Square-1 PLL parity fix, I put 6 corners on the bottom and 2 corners on top with 4 edges to each side of those corners (like an "eye" shape), then swapped those 2 corners (fixing the parity), restored the cube shape, and solved.

@Mike and Gaétan, well said. I am glad that Gaétan is using his full name now, as this will help people better understand who he is. Some of his earlier posts and videos were confusing, somewhat baffling -- perhaps partly due to difference in language. The name Gaétan Guimond should be better known. Clear communication helps.

I had a cube in the early 80's and never got past the first two layers but never really "studied" it as I was only 8 years old at the time...

Restarted cubing as of this january and imedeately went online looking for a solution :o

But you guys have inspired me!
My Square-1 just came in and I'll have a go at it.

This may take a while though as I cannot dedicate many hours to cubing.

Thank's for the compliments. If I was fourteen times more intelligent than you I would no longer be human. If I did the cube so fast the first time is probably because I started with the 8 corners at the very begining.

I don't practice these day's there are some who are better than me. The competition does'nt interest me anymore. Never the less I would gladly come if invited, has a consultant or just has a visitor to see the new crop.

.....................................................................

The cube popularity took a dive after hungary budapest championship of the world in 1982. The return in competition after 21 years was the world championship in toronto canada in 2003. Exactly had the same place at the science fair my web page photo that I placed on my web site that I took on the national championship of 1982.

The name of my domain rubikscuberecord.com and I'm the only one to have solved the cube blindfolded. If you don't believe in the one that has brought back the cube you will have to answer to the irreversables evidence. Contrary to it's return in 2003 in the store where the cube sales were influenced by the championship wich was not the case in 1982.

I hope you do manage to come to a competition someday, and I hope I can make it there - it would be great to meet you.

Edit: Oh, and I also started with all 8 corners at the beginning, before I put in any edges. I figure that's why I got it in just 14 days. I found a single algorithm that would 3-cycle edges very early (R U R U R U R' U' R' U' R2); after that, I spent most of the 14 days figuring out how to solve the 8 corners. Once I got them, it was just a half hour or so (I wasn't very good at it) of doing 3-cycles on edges to solve all 12 of the edges and be done.

I didn't solve the 3x3 on my own, but I solved the pyraminx a couple of days ago for the first time, but the pyraminx isn't that hard!!! Now I'm trying to solve the megaminx for a week now, the day I got the megaminx I got it to the last layer (1.5 hour), the second day I figured out the oll, but now I'm stuck in pll. With oll I used the 3x3 algs, but it doesn't work with pll!!!!:( I hope that I will have solved it bij the end of the week, otherwise I think I'm going to look for the solution...

Celli, did you ever learn the R' D' R D method for 3x3 to orient and permute the corners after fixing the edges? You can do the same on a megaminx :P I recommend using F RUR'U' F' to get your edges oriented, then Sune to place the edges (Don't forget to U2' instead of U2), then do the R' D' R D thing I just showed you.
