Who's solved the cube without instructions?

Celli, did you ever learn the R' D' R D method for 3x3 to orient and permute the corners after fixing the edges? You can do the same on a megaminx :P I recommend using F RUR'U' F' to get your edges oriented, then Sune to place the edges (Don't forget to U2' instead of U2), then do the R' D' R D thing I just showed you.

what do you mean by R'D'RD method??

It surprises me that nobody mention the grandaddy of the Rubik Cubes - Erno Rubik himself.

I saw an interview with him when he said it took him many many many months for him to solve the cube.

I myself was able to solve all the edges by myself but it took many many days before I could undestand the concept.

I have solved the Pyraminx, and some of the v-cubes without instructions. There are probably a couple others too.

I've solved most puzzles on my own, orb-it, whip-it, missing link, platypus, 5x5x5-7x7x7
1x1x1  UFO, lots of others, but anyhow, my goal is to never look up puzzle instructions until I've solved a new one by myself atleast once. I'm currently stumped by the FTO, it's hard.

I always try and solve my puzzles intuitively first before looking up instructions,
3x3x3 took the longest to figure out cuz it was the first one i tried.

I made my own LBL method; for the last layer i had 2 algos to permute the corners and orient a cross at the same time, then I used (what I now know as) sune to orient the corners and then to permute the edges
I also figured out the square-1, 4x4, and 5x5 (excluding parity cases for all of these though)

I can say that I have never looked up or been shown an algorithm and my PB is 16.06 on 3x3 :) I also figured out every other puzzle I own.

I'm currently stumped by the FTO, it's hard.

FTO was for sure the hardest for me to solve. It took about two weeks, and my time is arond 7 minutes. Square-1 was 2nd hardest, I sat down with it and didn't get up until I'd solved it 4 hours later. Figuring out the puzzles is the fun part for me. Solving them faster later is just a bonus.

Ack, whenever people see me cube, one of the questions asked most of the time is, "How did you learn it?" And I tell them I learned it online. Right after, it's obvious that they are much less impressed. And I can tell they see it as a sort of "downside" Then, I wish I had learned to do it myself.

I couldn't have figured it out on my own, I was 11 when I found it interesting. But I did get my brother to teach me then.
I figured out the Megaminx on my own, but it's basically a 3x3 clone..

I got a traditional 3x3 for my birthday about 20 months ago now, took me 18 months very much on and off to solve it, no guides, no help. Also got a V-Cube 7 for christmas and I did that a couple of weeks ago with no guides and no help, took me much less time cause I worked on it for longer at a time, and I understood cubes better. Also did a 2x2 on an iPhone app the other week, by simply realising it was just corner algs, and I got down to 12s after about 10-15 mins of playing with one on friday...

Now I have a PB (for 3x3) of 20.83 with 2-look OLL and PLL... just started learning full PLL. :)

Figured out the cube by yourself?

How many of you figured out the cube by yourself before searching for a solution?
I for one did not. I used the seven step solution guide that came with cubes a few years ago. Then I switched to Petrus and then to CFOP with a 2LLL, which is what I use now.

The very fist time I solved a 3x3 cube I used some algorithms I worked out after a few weeks of messing with a scrambled cube and a solved cube which came apart easily.
Since then Ive learned a lot of methods and algorithms, as of I can solve the cube using 7 methods ... might be 8, but most of the time I use CFOP or Roux

and of course with some logic and maybe 2 Googles for a parity algorithm, I figured out the rest of the puzzle cubes, 2x2 - 7x7, Never needed any kind of method for the Floppy or the Pyraminx ... who does?

Yes, I worked it out over a couple of weeks when I was about 13 yo. Took me a little while to work out layer by layer approach. 1st layer then took about 10 minutes, 2nd layer about an hour and 3rd layer about 2 weeks. I worked out some commutators to do corners, then edges. I also worked out larger cubes up to any size, the megaminx and gigaminx without instructions.
