How long does a Rubik's Cube last? (Store Bought)

i have a lube, but it has petroleum distillates in it.

i use my cube intensively, (i not sure how much i use it, but i even use it at school:p) so if i lube with it, how much life does my cube have?

btw, it's 3 in 1 professional silicone lubricant. im not sure if its the same lube mentioned in the wiki.

A lot of silicone lubricants say they have petroleum distillates, and usually it's ok to use them for a while. All cubes wear out eventually, as far as being a really good speedcube is concerned. A worn out cube can make a good one-handed cube in some cases though, because it will tend to be a bit looser.

My oldest store bought cube, which I currently use as my one-handed cube, is 11 years old. However, my best speedcubes wear out within 6-12 months and I replace them with new ones.

anyway 6 months is a loooonnnggg time. thanks, chris :)

Yes it can seem like it at first, but basically just know that your cube will wear out faster than you want it to. Don't try to suck every last bit of life out of a cube that you can, if it's worn out just get a new one.

btw what;s that algorithm in your sig?

Try it on a solved cube and see what happens ;)

If you ask me, it's already too late.

so i guess i'll lube with that stuff

I wouldn't if I were you.

btw, is the lube im using the same one in the wiki?

Doubtful. I haven't checked recently, but the ones mentioned are probably CRC, Jigaloo, Shock Oil, the Rubik's/Puzzleproz lube, and maybe Silikon Oil (spelling?).

Lolno.

ok and thanks for the help

(nice forum :))

edit: algorithm does nothing lol

was it meant to be a joke?

Basically, it's the long way for D'. Look at the alg. There's only one move in there that isn't kind of, mirrored.

imho it does:
- D
- rotates u-centre 90 degrees cw
- rotates d-centre 90 degrees ccw

In other words it proves that any scramble can be solved by twisting just 5 sides.

I used to be in your situation, with an old heavy use storebought and nasty fumey lube. I used it, after starting a lube cycle of once a week (or more), for about 8 months. It still works alright (although, it is prone to pops). I just took the thing apart before I sprayed it, and let it dry overnight.

Really, I didn't care so much about the degradation, it was just a pain to leave the thing sitting there for 8 hours (plus the hour or so of taking a part, spraying, etc). With the other lubes I've used (jig a loo and crc), I can keep it assembled, and begin actually solving it right away (although I do work in the lube for a few minutes, just to spread it). Depending on how much you've used this lube, you may be able to extend its life by just taking it apart before you spray it. It will make it looser I guess, but I think once a cube is on it's last run, nothing but downhill is ahead.

Oh, and it's never a bad idea to have two cubes, don't chuck that one (or shatter it, or let it crumble to dust in your hands) and get another one, why not, right?
