How long does it usually take someone to get consistently sub-20?

It completely depends on the individual's talent, dedication, skill, practice efficiency, and time. It could take a couple months, or several years. It took me a bit less than 6 months to go from being able to fully solve the cube by myself to being sub-20, but that could be way less or way more time than it takes someone else.

I've been cubing for almost 9 years (since 2015), and it probably took me about 4 years to get consistently sub-20, and my first sub-20 average in comp was in February of 2020. (My PR average is now 8.27, you can check out my WCA profile here or on my SS profile.

Theres no real answer that we can give you we could give an average time that it would take but some people that took years to get it (like @BVCuber13 ) would inflate that number by alot so that still wouldnt give that great of a response (it took me like 8 months thp)

It took me 5 years to become sub-20, and about 1 week after I ditched rubiks brand and bought dayan zhanchi in 2013.

It took me 2 months to become sub-20 using Roux in 2016.

I was averaging like 45 before taking a 1 year + break from cubing. After I got back into it, it took less than a year, maybe less?

If you consistently practice, i would say about 11 months. Unfortunately, most people tend to drop off cubing at the 2/3 month mark and the 1 year mark. If you find a way to keep you motivated then you could do it in even less time as long as you practice in the right way.
