I can't work on the compass cube today or tomorrow as my professor dropped some homework on us mid-week. the prof also did not bother to extend the due dates.

but since I'm on my computer, I can work on some designs for colored tiles. will be working with white, red, blue, orange, black, and copper. yellow and green don't really look good with grey imo

I just realized that I need to use screws for the center pieces instead of nails. nails need to be glued into place thus making the puzzle unable to be disassembled. for now, I am going to use some wood screws, but I will eventually switch to threaded brass inserts that can accept machine screws.

minor setback: I didn't have the right size nails so I tried to drill the holes in the center pieces bigger. both holes were drilled at an angle so I will have to reprint.

Okay, I finally have an evening off. I've gotten the right parts and things are printing right now. only 4 corner pieces left (approx 20 minutes) let's hope everything goes smoothly. I will assemble the puzzle by tonight, and see if my new design is better than v1 even without magnets. just to remind yall, this design is a complete rework, every piece got redesigned and is either rounded or scaled down. not to mention magnet slots. I can confidently say that I'm terrified to magnetize this thing. I've only magentized the 3 moving layer this time...the dials are next and there are so many...my 3d printed 3x3 took 4 hours to magnetize lol.

oops, I forgot that everything needs to be sanded. be back in about half an hour of inhaling plastic dust.

okay, so everything needs a really good sanding there are lots of pieces, and 3d printing tolerances aren't as good as injection molding. plus I may have given everything exact dimensions that work on paper... but not irl. for now, the layers move, but the dials are completely stuck. no movement whatsoever. I had this with the V1 tho so everything should be okay. This makes me want to sell these things even less lol. Every one is a painful passion project. I can't believe I'm making myself magnetize this thing.

I am having a significant amount of trouble making this thing turn. oddly enough, this things slice layers turn better than v1, but v1's dial is better than v2

I solved the problem! all it needed was a good soak in some soapy water (to get rid of all the tiny plastic particles) and some lunar/cosmos. the dials turn better now, and hopefully will be faster after break in. have yet to fully assemble tho.

New idea: I will not be magnetizing the edges of the puzzle. it really doesn't make sense. it would be the equivalent of what the valk elite did with the center pieces, and that's really not necessary.

y'know, this puzzle can be recreated in any size! but...the bigger it is, the harder it is to turn (for 3d printed ones at least). I could make a 2x2 one after this. or a 1x1 just for kicks lol. a 4x4 or 5x5 wouldn't be hard to make, but turning might be a nightmare.
