I disagree. I do running and martial arts, and I still consider cubing a sport.

Being cool to watch is not the only requirement to being a sport. Abunickabhi was providing one example as to why he thinks cubing and curling are sports.

Oxford languages defines a sport as: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
Growing grass does not involve physical exertion. It is also not entertaining, not competitive, and requires little to no skill.

However both cubing and curling, have all of these essentials.
Gardening can be competitive. Gardening involves physical exertion. @Filipe Teixeira can be a grass gardener and employ advanced techniques to have the most beautiful, aromatic grass in Brazil. Entertainment is subjective, gardening can be competitive, and it does indeed to skill to be a very good gardener.

Grass growing is a sport.

But you see, competitive gardening and plain old grass growing are very different things.
I would say that most often, competitive gardening is a sport. Grass growing is not.

But it's not plain old grass growing. I'm talking about the sport of competitive grass growing. Gardening is the growing of plants for reasons such as eating and decorative purposes. There are many different types of grasses, over 11,000 kinds. It can be used to create beautiful lawns, to create football fields, golf plains, etc. It can be used as a food source for animals, like sheep, deer, horses, and many more. Grass can even be bought in stores to feed your cat. Truly, grass is quite versatile.

Why do so many people use grass in their yards? Why does it far outnumber mulch on developed properties, why do middle-aged men spend so much time keeping up with it? Because grass is beautiful and practical. And of course, lush green grass is more desirable than dead brown "grass", and certain types of grass are more desirable than others.

The Grass sportsman is deeply enthused in triumphing over his fellow players in this great game of conquest. He checks his grass several times a day, looking at it in fascination as it matures. He vigorously tends it and nourishes it over countless hours spent on his hand and knees. He tries with his might to have the most beautiful lawn, to have the most gorgeous plots, to have the most appealing grass garden. He is a prime example of a gardening sportsman.

Why should grass growing not be considered gardening? It certainly has its usages and I personally adore beautiful lawns. I love colours, but I'd rather see a gorgeous grassy landscape than a tulip field. The flower growers have so much bare dirt in their work and much inconsistency. The true grass grower covers it all and strives for uniformity. I consider grass growing to be gardening, why wouldn't I?

You're wrong.

Growing grass is a fascinating way to spend your time. It's a common sight to see grass growing in nature. Farmers grow grass for food or to use it for making clothes and other items. People grow grass because it's fun to watch and keeps them busy. Grass growing is a sport because it is fun to watch and can be entertaining.

Growing grass is fascinating to watch since it moves and grows on its own. Many people like watching grass grow since it corresponds to the growth in their lives. Growing grass also reminds us of our childhood when they would play games and have fun. Watching grass grow is like watching something else independently instead of someone working out. It's a simple form of exercise that we can do at home without training camps or athletes. Essentially, growing grass is a form of exercise without the soreness or muscle strain.

Sports are good ways to keep you active and healthy. Grass growing is a simple form of exercise that you can do at home without any training. It's a simple way to keep yourself healthy and fit. Many people use their growing time as time for relaxation or time for the body to repair itself. Others use it as time for their bodies to eat and get strong. Essentially, there are many uses for your growing time- and all of them are good.

People make growing grass into a sport by competing against each other. There are several types of competitions that you can join as a grass grower. One type of competition involves measuring the length of grass seedlings before they grow up. Other competitions involve measuring the height and width of their plants after they grow up. The person who wins the competition wins a prize, such as a medal, trophy or award. Everyone who grows grass does it to compete in a sport they enjoy and find rewarding!

Growing grass is an interesting topic to write about since it's so common in nature. Everyone likes watching grass grow since it reminds them of their childhoods or times they spent relaxing. Grass growing also makes for an ideal form of recreation without any negative consequences or strain on your body systems. Anyone can join in and make grass growing into a sport by competing, measuring or just watching grass grow!
Deeply embedded sarcasm. This is good stuff Filipe.

growing grass is cool to watch
thus growing grass is a sport

Stay on topic, people. @DuckubingCuber347, you've read the forum rules. You've thrown them at people multiple times before.
You of all people should know better than to continue this completely off-topic argument.
The forum rules clearly say "Within a thread, do not derail the thread off-topic." So bring this thread back to the intended topic.

100% on topic. Not every post has to be cubing-related to be relevant.

The question was asked, "is cubing a sport?" and many users gave their opinion. The argument, however, was going nowhere so the discussion turned towards a different question that needed to be answered first: "What is a sport?" Several people gave their opinion, it needs to be competitive, it needs to be interesting, and it needs to involve physical exertion. These were all potential reasons for what makes a sport, a sport. Now, obviously, entertainment value is arbitrary, and just because something is competitive and requiring of physical exertion does not entitle it automatically to be called a sport. Filipe and I poked fun at this by giving grass growing as an example. Grass growing fills all the criteria of the examples given, so why can't it be a sport?

Not every argument has to dwell on the same subject and some of the greatest works are of humour and satire. Surely you have heard of Johnathan Swift, Tom Lehrer, and Alfred Yankovic. Have you not?

The WCA website's explanation of the WSOT

"The WSOT is a newly created team with the goal of seeking further recognition of the WCA as a sporting organization both nationally and globally"
And...? Of course the WCA wants cubing recognized as a sport. It would give it more credibility in the eyes of some. To others, like me, it would be ridiculously silly. The WCA is run by people, people have opinions, some of those opinions are that cubing is a sport.

If chess is a sport speedcubing is a sport
Are you implying that if chess is not a sport then cubing is not a sport either? Because chess isn't a true sport, it's just a:

Glorified Board Game

Funny.
When this topic had it's thread in 2018(the oldest I remember right now), I destinctly remember the big majority saying Yes, Speedcubing is a sport.

The thread linked above has a pretty even field of yes and no.

In This thread the vast majority says No, Cubing is not a sport.

Personally, I don't voice my opinion here, but it is very curious how the collective mind shifted. Only reason I can find is the big influx of new members 2 months ago.

There are multiple definitions of the word "Sport."

1) Do you think physical exertion is required for something to be considered a sport?
2) Are finger tricks & the act of solving "physical exertion" in the context of sporting (ie, breathing requires physical exertion but simply breathing is clearly not a sport)
3) If athletes play sports are cubers athletes?
4) What about my previous analogy of speed painting?

I am going to take up grass growing.
