recon? (Why did I say that nobody's nice enough to recon megaminx solves)

Nice single, what carried you through? Was it a lucky solve or did you just have exceptional lookahead? What are your average splits?
On average, I get the cross done at 5-10 seconds, then finish F2L at the 25-30 second mark. I get S2L done at the 55-60 seconds mark. Then I finish OLL/PLL in 10-15 seconds, longer if I screw up PLL.
I guess what happened is that I pushed myself to turn just a little faster in F2L/S2L during that solve. I would say that the f2l/s2l was pretty normal, but for some reason decided to speed up. Maybe I have to speed up all the time to reach that sub-1:10 average.

I frickin did it! I broke the 1-minute barrier for a megaminx single!
View attachment 19159
Megaminx is my favorite event now!
Just a quick story of my megaminx progression: in April of 2020, I got my first megaminx, the Shengshou megaminx. My first time was around 4:30. After a while, I stopped megaminx because the puzzle was starting to turn horribly.
In June of 2021, I got the YJ yuhu megaminx for 11 dollars on TC, since it was on a sale. A few days later I was sub-2 consistenly, close to sub-1:30. A couple of months later, and I got bored of the puzzle. I didn't get the times I wanted, I used a bad method of solving, and I was slow.
Fast forward to January, when I got that Angstrom lube and DNM. I cleaned the megaminx, used the set-up lubes, and broke it in. It felt amazing, and I was getting good times, encouraging me to solve faster and faster.
Then 4 months later, TODAY, I break the one barrier top megaminx solvers had trouble with: the sub-1. I bested it today.
Now, my goal is under 60 seconds consistenly. Thanks to YJ for making the Yuhu V2 M, @a small kitten for making it possible to get the cube at a good price, www.cubeskills.com for great tutorials, this guy, and you guys, the cubing community.

For anyone who needs this advice:
Do not think of a megaminx as a 3x3, but think of megaminx as a new puzzle.
Sure, you have cases similar to 3x3 on the megaminx, but you have more layers, so fewer restrictions are applied.
You could say that the puzzle is just a 3x3 with extended f2l. There are a lot of pairs. However, the megaminx is more like a 3x3 but with fewer restrictions, allowing you to get really efficient with F2L/S2L. But you also don't want to think about the cases as F2L cases. You don't want to spend time fumbling around, trying to get the corner and edge in the same layer. Instead, try to use 2-3 layers to get the pieces together, and then find a way to insert them efficiently that doesn't cost fingertricks and rotations.

Dang, whenever I do mega I always can't find the edge or the corner and I have to look all over the cube to find it... a lot of times its in the back so I have to cube rotate to get it out. And my megaminx sucks so yeah.

So, earlier today I competed in the Rose City First Timer's comp in Portland, Oregon. I had a lot of fun.
Thanks to @Kit Clement for organizing this comp!

anyway, let's go into how I did:

First Round:
Single: 12.27
Average: 14.32
Solves: 14.60 (12.27) 13.11 15.26 (19.80)
First time ever doing an AO5 in a competition, so don't make fun of me.

Second Round:
Single: 10.80
Average: 12.44
Solves: (15.84) 12.87 (10.80) 12.92 11.52
Pretty decent average, first solve was me still trying to get used to nerves, but the other solves were decent.

Third Round:
Single: 11.60
Average: 13.16
Solves: 12.33 13.09 (15.19) (11.60) 14.06
Last AO5 earned my 3rd place at the comp.

The podiums went Lucas Libed with a final 9.23 average, Bharadwaj Duggaraju with a 10.90 average, and me (Anthony Tindal) With a 13.16 average.

Despite my mom being a non-cuber, she is really competitive and takes a look how other people compete compared to herself. And since I plan to go to the Spokane Summer 2022, I want to be the best in my abilities. So she took a look at the other people's records in averages and singles, and saw my times were double of the record holders. So she is encouraging me to get a lot of practice in.
3x3: get better at planning first pair in inspection by getting used to tracking corners, predicting corner positions, tracking edges, and putting it all together. I also want to improve my cross solutions, which I am using an advanced cross tutorial by J-perm and a cstimer session to practice each tip that he gives me.
3x3 OH: get better at turning the puzzle with my OH hand (left) and get better at cross starts.
3x3 BLD: learn full 3-style corners and be able to actively use it in solutions. Also be able to memo in less than 20 seconds.
There is 2x2 and 4x4, but I am not a big fan of those events, so I wont compete in them.

Your mom is very supportive...
My dad won't let me buy new cubes, and my mom doesn't really like me cubing all day
Well, it's good to have a balance. I am a straight-A student in school, varsity on the track team for the 800m, and participate in a team-based/leadership organization called Civil Air Patrol.
