[Help Thread] Rubik's Magic and Master Magic Discussion

This may not be very helpful, but I've found that often Master Magic and larger puzzles can often be restored simply by solving it "tile-by-tile". Start at one end of the picture (the "unsolved" side), and manipulate the tile next to it until you get those two tiles to line up. Then go for the next one, and the next, one by one, until you've got it mostly solved. Work from one end of the puzzle to the other, doing top and bottom tiles. It requires playing with the rest of the puzzle as you go to make more motions possible (carefully, trying not to pull it apart), and sometimes you have to undo what you've done, but I've found that usually if you struggle with it for 10 or 20 minutes, you can eventually work it out.

And if not, it's usually because you accidentally tore it apart, so then you just go ahead and rebuild it. :)

The only real method I know for fixing a scrambled (master) magic is to give it to Jaap :D. Once someone gave me a magic and I literally couldn't leave the state at all (except a trivial flip forth and back) but then Jaap solved it. Your state at least is flat and you can do moves, so maybe just play around with it a bit more. One thing I find somewhat helpful with scrambled (master) magics is to build a brick (like this) and fiddle around with that.

Master Magic...halp

Umm.. Anyone know any links to how to unscramble a Master Magic?

Here are some pics:

Lingao Super Magic (2x10, 20 tile) help?

Hey! I just bought a lingao Super Magic recently and I tried to solve it, but got it massively scrambed but somehow got it back to it's starting position. I was wondering if anyone had a solution to the 20 tile magic, because I would like to know. I have tried all of the tricks and tips I know, but they don't seem to work. If you have an idea/solution, you can either post it as text form (with pictures) or video, either I don't mind.

Many thanks,

Avajatar

Hi everybody!

I'm new here and I hope somebody can help me!
I recently bought a Rubic's Master Magic (I've had the "normal" Magic for years and wanted to try myself at the Master). So I folded it around a bit and got into the unavoidable 'scramble', having a hard time to fold it back into the normal 6x2 position. I watched youtube vids for a solution and found one (seemingly nobody has a solution to that, you have to fold around until you get it, which after some trying is possible, I found out).
Ok, so now I had it in the 6x2 formation again with the tiles all messed up. Again, I watched youtube vids how to get it back to the starting position, in which I succeeded.
Then of course I wanted to solve it, so back to youtube... as you most likely know there are a lot of vids that show different methods. And now here's my problem:
When I wanted to start solving it (no matter what method I wanted to use) I couldn't fold it the tiles the way they wanted me to...
as an example, I used this vid:
The guy says to fold it (at about 10 sec's in) and roll it over.. and when I try to do that, it doesn't work, it can't be rolled over (outer tiles are connected and can't be rolled)!!
I turned it over (starting position) and tried that very method on the other side and it works, only that the finished puzzle doesn't look at all like the result on youtube (the 5 "olympic rings") but only like some scrambled s**t...
Obviously my MasterMagic is somehow the wrong way. It can be brought into the 'home position', but it can't be solved.
So here's my question:
What is wrong with it and why? Have I
1) messed it up myself through intense folding (is that even possible??)
or
2) is it badly manufactured with the strings attached the wrong way from the beginning (unfortunately I haven't tried to solve it by manual when I first got it but scrambled it before even trying...)?
Has anyone ever had that same problem before? What can be done about it?
I'd really appreciate your help!!
Thanks!!

Oh, and if I accidentally posted this in the wrong thread or if there's already one concerning this (I checked but couldn't find one) I'm sorry, as I said I'm new here and don't yet know the proper ways..............;-)

It's probably just strung non-standardly. I bought quite a few back when it was an official WCA event, and I got a couple that were strung that way. Hopefully you can find a video somewhere that tells you how to properly string a master magic. If so, you should be able to take it apart and then put it together correctly. But beware - reassembling a Master Magic can be quite a challenge the first few times you do it! It's not a job for the timid - if you're not prepared to possibly spend quite a while reassembling it, don't try. And beware also that it is not uncommon, especially when you're not used to doing it, to break a string, and if you do that, it's not really possible to fix the string, and it's not very easy to make a new one. I always owned a couple of extra Magics so I could take them apart for extra strings in case one broke.

Or, alternatively, you could just figure out how to solve it the way yours is built. There's really nothing wrong with it being strung non-standardly - it's still essentially the same puzzle. When it was a WCA official event, there was no requirement that it be strung in the standard order, so you could have used it as it is for legal solves.

It's possible the front and back tiles of your Master Magic aren't assembled properly relatively to each other, in which case it's not solvable without taking it apart. If that's the case, you'll have no choice but to take it apart and reassemble it. But odds are fairly good that it's solvable as is, but just strung in the opposite direction from a standard Master Magic, in which case you have to solve it differently to get it solved.

First off, thank you for your answers! I really appreciate it!
I checked the front and back sides of the tiles, compared to a youtube vid where someone used a functioning one, they seem to be in order...
so I wouldn't necessarily have to take it apart to solve it, but finding a way on a wrong-strung master magic to solve on my own? I don't think so...;) it's not that I won't give it a try but I don't expect to succeed since I'm a bloody beginner on the master...... but who knows...?!
As for taking it apart and re-string it, I read articles on the web and they all say what you say, Mike Hughey, that it'll take quite a bit of time and perseverance to do it and that if you're a beginner it may be frustrating... I watched a vid where someone re-strung a master in like 20 minutes and it looked quite complicated.. must have been an expert. So I guess I'll save me the time and buy a new one;-)
So thanks again, I like your forum, keep up the good work!!

if you try to restring it buy some blutak it holds everything in place and makes it so much easier.

when string are mirror from the vid my first guess is that you have to do is.
The turn of the puzzle is good but then you have to mirror the solution in the vid

thanks for the tip, if I try to restring I'll do that!

that is a good idea! It's going to be hard, but I'll give it a try, thank you!!
