Ever since I started speedcubing in December of 2018, I have kept expanding the number of events I compete in and now I am thinking about specializing in one or two events. Right now I am a very all-around cuber being that I compete in ten events and I don't specifically practice one event. I enjoy bigger cubes like 4x4, 5x5, and Megaminx because of the lookahead required throughout the solve and I do side events (Skewb, Pyraminx, and Sq1) for fun. I also enjoy 3bld. At this point, I'm not worrying about it to much but I'm thinking about having a main event in the future.

I am considering a main event because,
1. It would be interesting to me to dive deep into a particular puzzle.
2. I could try to push the limits of the cube and learn a lot about it.
3. I could potentially win that event in a competition.

If I did end up having a main event, I would choose between 5x5/4x4, Skewb, Megaminx, Pyraminx, or maybe 3bld. The reason I put 5x5 and 4x4 together is that I use Yau for both and if I get good at 5x5, I might get better at 4x4 as well. Skewb and Pyraminx would be fun just as shorter events. 3bld would be more challenging though and I don't if I want to go in that direction.

So what do you think? If you have a main event, how did you choose? Why did you chose a specific event? Anyway, thanks for reading this, have a nice day. ;)

(Edit: By main event In this case I mean more of a specialization in one event. Not 'only practicing two or three events and not caring about the other events')

I am definitely more of an all around cuber, and at the moment I'm trying to improve my kinch ranks and SOR. However, my best event is clock at the moment, and I would say that's more of my main event. I would say to maybe get really good at one event, but still be an all rounder.

True, I enjoy all the events I compete in but I'm just looking for the event I like the most.

Honestly, just don't look for a main event, and just do what you feel like doing. Don't force yourself to practice something because it's your 'favourite event'. Some days you'll want to do blind, others big cubes, just do what you feel like practicing.

i currently practice 3-7 oh squan and megaminx. besides squan, these events all compliment each other so do something like this if ur into that ig.

As my signature says, my main event is megaminx. I've basically always liked megaminx, and I've also basically always been good at it, getting a sub-2 official average at my first megaminx comp, back in mid-2016. For me, maining megaminx was always a no-brainer. I've competed in every event officially (even feet!), but megaminx is still my favorite. The fact that it's considered a side event was an encouragement for me, rather than a discouragement, becuase it meant that I could get world class at it with less effort than more popular events. That worked out pretty well :p It really does ultimately come down to what you like to practice though. My personal recommendation is megaminx (obviously) or 3BLD. I learned 3-style recently and that made 3BLD so much more fun to me. If you do MBLD in addition to 3BLD, I think you'll have a lot of fun once you overcome the barriers early on. The sense of accomplishment you get from blind events is much more than what you get from speedsolving events. But, feel free to completely ignore my advice and main clock or something. Make cubing fun for you!

Yeah megaminx is fun, I just competed in megaminx after getting the Galaxy m in the beginning of this year and I was surprised to get a sub-2 Ao5! 3bld is definitely something I want to get into but I always seem to lack motivation to practice (maybe because I average like four minutes and it takes more time/brain power. As for clock...
No.

At the moment I'm maining OH and Mega. 3x3 is up there, and Feet got removed so I'm not practicing it anymore. I've been cubing for a bit but these have always been the events at which I was the best. I've competed in almost every event, except for clock. I don't have results in big blind either, but I'm working on it.
I was naturally drawn to the 3x3 events because I really enjoyed solving with ZZ, and that's mostly where it can be applied.
I've never really liked big cubes because they took a long time and improvement was boring for me.
2x2, skewb, pyra, and sq-1 I sorta jumped on the bandwagon of dissing the events, but they're hard to turn and not interesting to solve, so I don't really do them anymore.
The blind events just take too much mental and emotional energy to do, so I'm not consistent in my practice, but I do want to get better.
I don't have any plans whatsoever to learn anything beyond OP/M2 and center comms, because I know that that can get me as fast as I can conceivably see myself going (approaching 1m, maybe), and I know that a large portion of the solve, especially at the beginner level is just improving memo speed. My execution certainly has things to be desired, don't get me wrong, but with essentially no changes and a little drilling, I could get it down to 45s easily.

and for the other events I do actually plan on getting decent times in everything just to have a reasonable SOR.
I'm thinking sub3 2x2, sub50 4x4, sub90 5x5 (or beyond, because I actually rather enjoy 5x5), sub3 6x6, sub4 7x7, sub5 skewb/pyra, sub 20 squan, and sub10 clock.
and then for events i care about:
FMC I hope to push to sub30
sub1 3blind would be cool
sub5 4blind
sub10 5blind
10 points on mbld at least
mega sub 40 for sure
OH sub12 for this year. Maybe worlds podium or wr eventually?

3x3 will be where ever, but if im good at oh, my 3x3 should be at least half decent

and thats my master plan to have a decent sor. but my focus is always going to be oh and mega.

I currently main 3x3, and I'm better at it than any other event by far. Once I'm able to get my hands on an Angstrom Clock, I'll probably main Clock as well, at least for a while.

I practice and compete in all events that I can. However, my main events right now are 3x3 and megaminx. My events that I still care about are 2x2, 5x5, 3BLD, and 4BLD. I would suggest limiting your main events to 2-3 if you want to get really good at an event or two. If you want to be decent at all events, then you can be an all-rounder. It is really up to personal preference.
