What's considered a "normal" rate of progression?

I learned 3X3 actively for about a year,
1 month to solve sub 1 minute
2.5 months (1.5 months later) sub 45,
3.5 months sub 40 (learned F2L)
4 months sub 35 (learned 2 look OLL/PLL)
5 months sub 30
9 months sub 20 (average ~19) (learned advanced F2L)

Didn't learn much else after that, but got more consistent. When I picked up learning 3X3 again almost 5 years later (yes I know...) I averaged about 26 seconds, took about a month to get back to 19 average, learned a few PLLs and almost yellow color neutral and now I average around 17-18 (about 2 months of practicing).

Truthfully, there is no normal rate of progression, since it depends how much time you have and how you practice. I started learning in high school and into COVID, so I had a decent amount of time to devote into cubing. It's a little harder for me now as an adult.

my rough progression (imo i have a very slow progression)

sub 1 - 8 months
sub 50 - 8.5 months
sub 40 - 9.5 months
sub 30 - 1 year, 2 months
sub 25 - 1 year, 8 months
sub 22.5 - 1 year 9 months
sub 20 - 2 years
sub 19 - 2 years 1 month

I now consider myself sub 18, maybe sub 17, after about 2 years, 7 months but have little recorded data to prove that for some reason.
since it was bumped I am not confidently sub 17.5, based on recent results sub 17, after 2 years and like 8/9 months.

Very happy with this recent boost in progression, already reached one of my 2026 goals i think.

Solid progression, have you considered coaching?

Here's every barrier I broke and when

Sub-2 minute: June 2025 (0 months)
Sub-minute: July 2025 (1 month)
Sub-50: August (2 months)
Sub-40: September (3 months)
Sub-30: October (4 months)
Sub-25: December (6 months)
Sub-20: February 2026 (8 months)
Now it's May and I'm averaging low 17.
nice progression
it’s looking similar to mine lol
