The Solve Critique Thread

But we're not going to know what's the problem with your solves if you're not posting an average solve. There could be big weaknesses with your normal solving that we're not seeing here.

Here is the whole average. http://www.youtube.com/attribution_link?a=4qXqFz0NJCA&u=/watch?v=5Bk3RK27Jek&feature=em-upload_owner

I wanted to know what stands out about that solve and what is wrong with it. Chances are if I'm doing something wrong in my fastest of solves I'm doing it wrong in my slower ones. I'm in the process of reconstructing the 12.61 then I'll go on to my other solves and do the same thing to compare. I was just wondering what was good and bad about that solve alone. I commonly get sub 13 solves but want to know what I need to do to do it consistently. Sorry if I broke some rules or caused confusion.

Please give me tips. I already know that I should stop the rotations in F2L and stop the U3s in PLL :p Other than that, what else should I improve?

I think getting a smaller cube might actually help you. The way you fingertrick and the size of your hands seems to be limiting you a little.

As for standard stuff, your cross is still sorta being done on top, and your F2L is really jerky. Try slow turning with a metronome, and increasing its speed when you're able to match each tempo without pausing. And of course now is a good time to start learning full OLL.

Please don't LOL with this Ao5. Even though it's me at my best it's got plenty of room for improvement. I feel so clumsy at OH that I had to mute a swear word in the middle of the video, and there are several cries of "c'mon", etc. to myself. The 3rd solve I stopped and DNFd it after failing the cross and did a crappy TH solve that you can criticise as well if you want but I have another TH Ao5 on cam that I can link as well if you need more solves to get an idea.

I would thank you for any constructive advice and I don't mind you making fun of me as well :)
I posted this yesterday in the Older cubers thread but I hope here it gets more visibility.

I ask for help so I will try also to give some. I agree with the advice you already got. Try to slow down during F2L so that your lookahead improves and you have less pauses. And also start learning full OLL, it will help a bit. I think you also need to plan your cross a bit better during inspection. Try to avoid rotations during F2L and, also, during OLL I have seen you rotate once or twice. You should avoid that. For PLL at times it might be better to rotate than to pre- and post-AUF but in OLL it makes no sense as you don't know yet what you'll get later so better to AUF always.

Apart from that I have seen you do an OLL that I liked and is not in my repertoire, I have to rewatch your video and see if I can grasp it.

EDIT: You do it on the 3rd and 5th solve, it's the cross with headlights on the left and I guess it's R U2 R2 U' R2 U' R2 U2 R. Am I right? For some reason I've always been stuck with f sexy f' F sexy F'

How are my solves?

A few days after uploading this i watched badmephisto's video on advanced cross, so now i can one-look the cross maybe 60% of the time
Your cross is fast enough to be easily sub 20. But...

Since you can mostly one-look your cross, stop looking at the cross when you do it and track your F2L pairs. You took some time finding your first pair. Also stop cube rotating so much. It stops the fluidity of your solves.

Your OLL is pretty good

Learn full PLL

Okay, I'll work on that. And I know and use full PLL, and 2 sets of COLL. How can I eliminate those cube rotations, I have to a lot in order to solve pairs using only RUL

Since you're not using ZZ, don't worry about only solving F2L with RUL, F moves are fine. About PLL, there was at least one solve in the average where you used 2-look, so you might need to work on your recognition a bit.
If you are still learning more COLL sets, I would say you should decide whether you want to know a lot of algs or get fast faster. If you want to have knowledge of a lot of algs sets, then that's cool, go ahead and learn COLL. But if you are just trying to get faster solves, trying to focus on COLL at this stage is just wasting time that you could be using practicing. Save that for more like ~15 seconds (and honestly I would go for full OLL before COLL).
And just to make sure you are aware, the second solve would be a DNF because of the slice move.
Hope this helps :D

Thanks, I'm not learning more COLL (I just don't like learning algs very much) and the 2-look was just a mistake.

Well I'm only a little faster than you (somewhere just sub-20), but I think I can give some insight into your f2l efficiancy cus imo I'm quite good with that.

Solve 1:
f2l 1:
-Unnecessary U/U' plenty of top layer pairs there, just calmly locate them.
-Otherwise ok
f2l 2
-Can be solved with no rotations, R' U' R (insert to back). I guess the double rotation was just a mistake though.
f2l 3
-With the white corner facing you, I'd solve this R U R' U2 R U' R (insert into back). The 2 rotations aren't good.
f2l 4
-good I think, can't really see clearly lol

Solve 2
f2l 1
-good
f2l 2
-good
f2l 3
-L U L' (insert pair) was all that was needed. I think you did about 12 moves, and a rotation.
f2l 4
-good.

I think maybe you need to practice some slow solving, sometimes you seem to panic and spam moves on a pair you probably know how to solve.

If you found this helpful I could do it with your other solves too.

I'm currently averaging sub 14, today I finished a 13.57 ao1000. Can you guys give me some tips based on this video?

Im sorry about the poor quality and angle, I'll try to improve that for next time.

Thanks in advance!

looks like good tps and good lookahead. probably try to reduce rotations and move by learning different f2l inserts.

I'm nowhere near your times but, from comparing your solves with those of top notch sub-10 solvers, I'd say you need to work on avoiding rotations by learning new ways to insert F2L pairs and also you need to improve your turning accuracy and also adopt a turning style that is a bit more efficient. I see that at times your fingers / hand do some long travel away from the cube at the end of a turn so it takes some time to go back. Hope it helps and apologies if it makes no sense.

Thanks alot man, I'll give these things a try, any help is appreciated. I did understand what you said aha

3x3 Tips on improvement pls. I avg 18-20s and I use full CFOP with intuitive f2l and algorithmic for some of them.

I am very sorry for the bad camera angle because I don't really know if there is a camera stand for phones.

Sramble:
U' B L F' R U L' F' U' R' U2 F2 L' D2 B2 D2 F2 L D2 F2

Reconstruction:
x2 y B2 U F (R' L) F2 D // Cross
U2 (R' U' R) // f2l#1
U y' (L' U L) (R U R') //f2l#2
U2 y (L U' L') // f2l#3
U' (R U R' U')*2 // f2l#4
U' (F R' F R2 U' R' U' R U R' F2) // OLL 30 aka Anti-Spotted Chameleon
U U' (l' U R' D2 R U' R' D2 R2 x') // PLL Aa-perm
U2 // AUF

Cube: Cyclone Boys 57mm (revamped version 2015)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
