[WR] Yiheng Wang 0.93 2x2 average

This is such a bizarre response. I don't care about 2×2×2. Whether it's Yiheng or Zayn or whoever else who gets the record, cool, good for them?

A sub-1 average would be impressive if it was obtained legitimately. Yiheng got his in a way that (pretty much) doubled his chances at WR; do you honestly think he would have requested for an extra if the original 5th solve was already good enough for WR?

Even if this result is disqualified, I'm sure he'll get a real sub-1 average in due time. That would be more worthy of respect, when it happens.
Bro it is legitimate the cover was lifted early for a world class solver that can mess up the focus. But obvi every1 will argue with me cuz I used to cheat.

The main issue is that the appeal was done after the solve. According to the WCA guidelines, an extra should only be granted in 'exceptional circumstances' if an appeal is made after the solve is finished. In my opinion, lifting the cover early is a relatively common and insignificant event, and should not be considered 'exceptional'.

Then he should have requested for an extra solve immediately, at the time of the incident. Which he did not.

Competitors should not be penalised for mistakes outside of their control; this much I agree with. What I don't agree with is that competitors should be able to exploit judges'/delegates' mistakes for their benefit – in this case, choosing to do the original scramble as is, with the option to get an extra and hope for a better solve, instead of unconditionally requesting for an extra solve immediately. I've expressed this opinion before.

It's not like this is Yiheng's first few comps, or even first few solves where incidents happened. If he doesn't know the protocol already, maybe this should be a wake-up call for him.

Also fix your persecution complex; not everything is about you.

I completely agree with @xyzzy. He basically got two chances for WR...

This has happened to me many times before where the judge lifted the cover early and I did the solve anyway, but I did not get an extra. It wouldn't be fair if Yiheng got the extra and that counted.

If its legit that this actually happened, I would call it cheating and exploiting like xyzzy said, so the WRC/WRT should rule it as 1.10.

I agree the WCA should definitely consider the possibility that the WR was not fairly achieved. However, congrats to Yiheng regardless. Sub-1 average is absolutely mental!

I also think that the average should be changed to a 1.10. If the judge lifts the cover before you are ready, you can be almost 100% certain you would be granted an extra for that. There is no reason to do the solve for an incident like that.

The only incidents I think that a competitor should finish the solve on are incidents where they were not sure if an extra would be appropriate. e.g. Getting a duplicate scramble but not being 100% sure if it was a duplicate scramble during the attempt.

There is one exception to this:

11e+) CLARIFICATION Since an appeal is not guaranteed to be successful, the competitor may choose to keep the timer running while appealing it, and resume the solve when appropriate.

This is from the WCA guidelines, not the WCA regulations.

The regulation is very clear on that. You have to ask for the extra -
... at the time of the incident, before finishing the original attempt, to be eligible for an extra attempt.
He did not do that. He was therefore not eligible for an extra.

The attempt ends when you sign.
Hasn't stopped someone from getting their original time before.
