What is FreeFOP?

FreeFop is not freedom to do anything, that FreeStyle Method.

FreeFOP is where you solve a 3/4 cross, then use the open slot from the cross to solve F2L in a Roux fashion (as they call it a free slot), then you do OLL, and PLL.

Nice 5 year bump. :p
Also, are you sure about your definition of freeFOP? I've always interpreted as just blockbuilding F2L in whatever way possible (as in, not confined to cross followed by four pairs), and then OLL and PLL.

Where did you get this definition? I've considered myself a FreeFOP user for years, and it's always been "whatever you want for F2L" > OLL > PLL

thats freestyle method, i know the original method and how it works. theres a freefop tutorial on youtube that doesnt involve with petrus, it could be the creator of freefop or original method of video.

Not sure if I buy it. I assume you're talking about this tutorial? I think that video is just that guy's interpretation of freeFOP, and it definitely does fall under the category of a freeFOP method, but from what I understand, freeFOP encompasses much more than that. Every time I've ever talked about freeFOP or heard it being discussed, it's what you're referring to as "freestyle method," which, when I searched on Google, had no results except for 3BLD stuff.

idk wut its called then. doing petrus blocks and then oll and pll is still advanced petrus. lbl using 4lll is still lbl.
i just know that thats an original method. freefop is not a mixed with petrus or blockbuilding, its sorta mixed with roux to do f2l efficiently.

Doing Petrus blocks and then OLL and PLL is not Petrus, because the two key parts of the Petrus method are blockbuilding and EO. If you skip EO, it's simply not Petrus anymore. Layer-by-layer with any number of looks for the last layer is still LBL. I'm not sure what your point in bringing up 4LLL here is.

(There's a subtlety here. The original Petrus method uses a 3LLL with CP-CO-EP, but this has long since fallen out of favour compared to OCLL-PLL. My opinion is that the last layer step(s) is/are essentially replaceable with whatever and not really part of a method's "identity", but this is just an opinion. Method categorisation is ultimately subjective.)

FreeFOP isn't a fixed method; you just use whatever looks convenient to use. See an easy Roux block? Build off that and exploit the M-slice freedom. See an easy xcross? A CFOP-like approach is fine too. That's what the "free" means. It doesn't mean that you deliberately leave a slot open, although that is one possible option.

People have been taking "FreeFOP" to mean freestyle F2L rather than any fixed method for years. (This thread is from 2011!) Even if the name originally referred to that weird 3/4-cross method (and it most likely didn't), that doesn't matter if the vast majority of people don't interpret it that way.
