When I watch top cubers doing solves, I'm amazed by the turning speed. My own speed is really slow in comparison.
I decided to set up a prepared solve and find out exactly how much of an effect my turning speed is having on my overall times. I took the following scramble:
B' U L2 F2 L' F2 U' F' D2 F' R2 D' B R D' F R2 D B2 U F2 R2 D R B'
I solved it over and over the same way, trying to see how fast I could get it. After a few times, the solution was memorized, so look-ahead was no longer a factor. It just comes down to raw execution speed and move count.
The first time that I attempted this scramble, I got a time of 23.51, and after numerous attempts, I finally got a personal best of 17.98.
My solution was 63 moves (32 f2l, 31 LL), and it used 4 cube rotations.
I figure my turning speed to be 3.5 tps.
3.5... that just seems, so pathetic. I imagine most fast cubers would get twice that.
Is there any way that I can work on this and get faster? Is turning speed only going to come with more practice or is there some way I can train it?
