i have been cubing for about 2 years and i wanna get into speed cubing on the 3x3, i have learnt f2l, and now im curious on what the best way is to solve the last layer?

thanks

Instead of OLL, do EJF2L ;) that's about 14 algs, easy to remember and fast to perform (almost all sub-1). Far better than Fridrich OLL. The PLL-cases can be done with T, Y, H and Z. J, J' and F-perm are additional. Sometimes you have to permutate the last 3 edges with Allan or reverse Allan.

EJF2L: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR2K3Xq6ux8
T: (RUR'U')(R'FR)(RU'R'U')(RUR'F')
Y: F(RU'R'U')(RUR'F')(RUR'U')(R'FRF')
H: (M2 U)(M2 U2)(M2 U)(M2)
Z: (M2 U)x2 (M'UU)(M2 U2)(M'U2)
J: (RUR'F')(RUR'U')(R'FR)(RU'R'U')
J': (R'U2)(RUR'U2)(LU'RUL')
F: (R'U'F')(RUR'U')(R'FR)(RU'R'U')(RUR'UR) (I love this alg!)
Allan: (L2 U'BF')(L2 B'FU'L2)
reverse Allan: (L2 UBF')(L2 B'FUL2)

What do you say about these? There are of course plenty alternatives for the PLL cases, a simple search away ;)

EJF2L is only when the last layer edges are oriented, and the video you showed I believe is only when one corner of the F2L is off... if it was correct then you would still need the 7 OCLL algs from 2lookOLL.
So what you're actually recommending is that instead of learning 9 algs to deal with orientation, he should learn ~26.
Also you're pll recommendation is over complilcated, you can do corners with A perm (or E/Y if it's a diagnoal swap) then you only need U for the edges, but you can add the inverse U + H and Z if you want to save repetition.

What says it can't be CLL/ELL or COLL/EPLL or L4E/L4C or any of the other alternatives.

Well, CLL/ELL is ever so slightly trickier to identify - but that may not be a problem and this could be just as good as OLL/PLL
COLL/EPLL doesn't deal with the Edge orientation so that's an extra step.
and L4C has more than 80 algs by itself which makes for tricky recognition and it has some terrible algs. (and there is no such thing as L4E, it's ELL)

So yeah, the reason why OLL/PLL is mainstream is because it's really good.

CLL/ELL requires less moves on average. Recognition probably takes longer to learn but I think can be just as fast eventually. Also slightly less algs. I'd really like to see an ELL time attack or all ELL sub 2s/1s. Has anyone done that?

You could learn Petrus. Easier last layer.
Or Roux, and not even have to do a 'last layer'
Maybe take another 2 years to learn ZBLL and do it 1 step.
Or you could do what everyone else does and learn OLL and PLL, but thats too mainstream like emo says.
