Some pieces popped out of my super square one (looks like this : http://www.jpearly.com/image/cache/data/mf8-ssq-B2-500x500.jpg) and I had to put it aside before I could put it back in, it's been a couple weeks and I wasn't sure where they came out so I just put them in a random spot. I've never solved this one and while trying to get it back to square I keep getting stuck with one of the middle layers having 2 small pieces next to each other, is this normal or have I messed something up with the piece placement?

It is always possible to bring the puzzle back to cubeshape, no matter how you put the pieces together. Check out the picture here - I think you have the middle one of the three purple states in the bottom row.
I don't even know how to read that chart O.O
