I just had a few questions about stackmats.

where is a good place to buy them?
also is a minimat ok to go with the timer? the full sized mat seems a bit big.
do you even need the mat for it to work?

You can get them off their website, cube4you (not recommended) or Target or here in Australia K-mart. The minimat works fine with it and no you dont need a mat at all for it to function.

A few notes:

As Leviticus says, the mat is unnecessary if all you want to do is time yourself. The mat is like a big mouse pad, but a bit thinner. A REALLY REALLY big mouse pad. :)

The timers that come in the kits that you can buy at retail stores do NOT have a data port and do NOT have a memory function. If you want to connect the timer to an external display, or to your computer for use with Cal Cube Timer, you'll need the data port.

The only timers that have the data port and memory are the ones on the speed stacks web site:

ahh ok sweet. so if i get one of the data port ones there are PC programs i can use? that would be cool.

oh sweet i might check out a kmart for them, it would be much cheeper to just buy it in a store in AUS.

in the pictures of the sets the timers look different to the ones with the data ports
like they dont have the cool yellow hand prints. but apart from the memory function and the port there the same?

you can buy it at cube4you.com or speedstacks.com and no you don't need the mat to work although I recently purchased a mini mat and I can't wait for it to come and the regular one is way too big becuase it is for the cups but like I said the mini mat is good so you don't dent or scratch the surface you are cubing on.
