[Help Thread] Square-1 Discussion

My splits atm are 2-10 (depends on the shape)-3-4-(4-6)(depends on whether I have parity)-(6-8).

Shows I need to work on cubeshape and to increase tps.

Also I recommend trying to look ahead into corner orientation (seperation) during inspection or cubeshape. For example, many cubeshapes are "R, U" or almost "R, U" so you can tell what the two colors at DL are going to be. Personally I try not to look at the bottom before CO (CS) so there is no pause there.

I am really bad at looking ahead to CO. I'll get a fist-fist cubeshape or something and still stare at it for awhile in inspection convincing myself of what CO is going to be ;_;

That's very very hard. I'll try my best.

Definitely work on cubeshape. Try to work out which cases are taking you the longest, and then learn how to do them optimally, but most importantly, look at what shapes the puzzle goes through before getting to cubeshape. It's important that you get a "feel" for how cubeshape works.

And I have no idea what I'm averaging. Haven't solved since my last comp :p

My problem is, I know advanced cubeshape (group 5 edges --> kite-scallop) but I don't really use it. Sometimes I see 3 corners paired on the bottom and 3 done on the top, and I AUF/ADF and slice to get to one of the 5 "star" cases.

Most of the time, I use the group corners method even when I can easily form the hatchet (the shape with 5 edges paired on top, that's how David Woner calls it) and go to kite scallop, because my execution is faster that way. However, it is very inefficient (max 3 slices to group corners, then max 6 slices to go to cubeshape --> 9 slices max, while each cubeshape optimally takes less than 7 slices).

Shaking off bad habits sure is hard.

Another question: in advanced cubeshape, when there is hatchet on top and line on bottom, why do all of the tutorials slice once to get to hatchet-perpendicular edge? Why not slice to get barrel-scallop? Executing barrel-scallop is faster and easier to AUF/ADF and recog for me. (slice along line of symmetry to get shield-shield or muffin-muffin).

I don't have a sq1 on me, but if I understand your question it's because the next slice goes to scallop kite (5 slices), where your solution is 6 slices.

Also, I would likely do [hold the corner-edge-corner on front, edge block on BL and line on right] 1/5/0,2/ etc [scallop scallop on back]

Wait

hatchet-line / barrel-scallop / shield-shield / barrel-barrel / kite-kite / done

hatchet -line / hatchet-perpendicular / scallop-kite / fist-fist / kite-kite / done

Both are 5 slice moves!

Depends on which you can fingertrick easier. You can also do
hatchet-line / barrel-scallop / muffin-muffin / barrel-barrel / kite-kite / done
Personal preferance. I highly recommend going through all the optimal shapes a few times, for example on Andrew Nelson's site. You don't have to use all of them, but it's definately helpful. I learned optimal shape in one or two weeks by just going through them once a day and practising cubeshape.

Hello,
What do you think about Jason Baum's PLLs for square-1? Are they easier and faster than Lars Vandenberg's method?

How do you get to sub15 once you're sub20?
I'm somewhat sub-20 and I can't imagine consistently being sub-15. My recognition is decent and pauses aren't that long either.
So what do you practice on? Reducing pauses further? Learn more cubeshape and EP algs?

If you're sub17 or under, what did you do to get there (from sub20-21)?
Thank you.

If you can't solve every cubeshape optimally (or with a slightly sub-optimal alg that you know is faster for you than an optimal solution), then definitely work on that.

Also:
- You'll get used to turning faster the more you practice with the puzzle
- Reducing pauses further is always a good thing, and you can start to achieve this by actually looking ahead (e.g. recognizing CP before/during EO, recognizing how many edges will be solved in each layer after you do your CP alg so you will be more prepared to recognize the specific case)

Need an Alg for that case.
Firstly, this thread is for square-1, not square-2. Secondly, don't post the same thing in two different places.
In answer to your question, I can't really see your video clearly, because your hand is in the way. Maybe show a video of the cube resting on a table, then turn it 90 degrees at a time so we can clearly see all sides.
