slot insertion

how do you insert slots?

I wouldn't consider R U R' an insert, I consider an insert when you already have the pair made.
It depends on the other pairs or bad cases. Different inserts are used for different cases. For example, if I'm inserting a pair and I see another free pair already formed, I'll use the insert that won't break up that pair, or if I see a bad case coming up after I insert the pair, I'll use the insert that will break up the pair.

The way I do sledge hammer angles the u face away from me so I'd loose look ahead for a split second.
RUR' angles the u face toward me so I can continue look ahead.

I'd only use sledge hammer if I had 2 pairs in U and RUR' would disturb the second one.

R U' R'
or
L' U L
or if it slot is agains their own colors, like green, whit red above then is green on de front with de green center on de front.
F' r U r'
Or mirrored
F R' F' R.

But what er sledgehammers?

I use both. Sledgehammer less often when I have enough lookahead to see edges have bad orientation, not just for partial edge control but for next pair.

exactly this.
besides, i really like R U2 R' and even more L U2 L' or R' U2 R.
inserting in the back and the U2 gives me better look ahead.

I completely agree, I am only just finding out how U2 inserts give far superior lookahead than U or U', at least for me. I am suprised at how big the difference is.
