so I was thinking in terms of solving f2l using only <yU> and combination of those insertions, solving always the FR slot:

F <U, U', U2> F'
R <U, U', U2> R'

 Twizzle link
 Setup
F2 D R' F B2 D' F U R U2 D2 R' L2 U2 B2 R' L2 B2 D2
 Moves
//P1
(y U')
F' U2 F
U
F' U' F

//P2
(y2 U)
R U' R'

//P3
(y U')
R U2 R'
U'
R U R'

//P4
(y2 U)
R U' R'

all f2l cases can be solved using this theory

I know it's not revolutionary but maybe just one way to view and describe intuitive f2l

If you'd like to see what optimized solutions look like, I wrote a solver for this back in 2015 for the Worlds prepared speedsolve: https://cubing.net/f2lfast/

I also uses sledgehammer variations, but for your case I get a 26-mover with LL skip using only 3-move insertions:

 Twizzle link
 Setup
F2 D R' F B2 D' F U R U2 D2 R' L2 U2 B2 R' L2 B2 D2
 Moves
U L' U L U' R U R' // Slot: FR
U2 B' U2 B . L U' L' // Slot: BL
L' U2 L U' R' U' R // Slot: BR
F U' F' // Slot: FL
U'

Written using <y, U, F' U* F, R U* R'>:
 Twizzle link
 Setup
F2 D R' F B2 D' F U R U2 D2 R' L2 U2 B2 R' L2 B2 D2
 Moves
(y' U) [F': U]
(y U') [R: U]

(y2' U2) [F': U2]
[R: U']

y [F': U2]
(y2 U') [F': U']

y2 [R: U']
U'

I've also gotten as low as 2.83s on this:
 Twizzle link
 Setup
F2 D R' F B2 D' F U R U2 D2 R' L2 U2 B2 R' L2 B2 D2
 Moves
U L' U L U' R U R' // Slot 1
(y U2') R' U2' R // Zeroing
y R U' R2' // Slot 2
U2' R U' L' U' L // Slot 3
y R U' R' U' // Slot 3
