Do you guys remember when you first learned to solve your first cube? How it took you two hrs sitting in front of the computer just watching that one tutorial over and over again, and even then it took ALOT of practice to solve it. Then that feeling you got when you actually solved it for the first time, and you just had to mess it up again and see if you could do it again. And how those videos on youtube of those ppl doing it in 7- even 25 seconds was so inspiring. Now we're doing it in ten seconds and we still think were slow?
I first got started into cubing when i was a freshman in high school, my friend came to school with a rubiks cube and solved it right in front of me. I was exrtemely amused, although no one else was impressed i still was. The first thing i did when i went home was went out and bought a rubiks cube. Tenth grade came around and i think i was averaging 20-25 seconds around then, i went to school and showed that guy up. He was still averaging around 1-2 minutes after a year. I took a break for a year or 2, practically forgot all the pll and oll algs, i learned them all over again in about a month. I dont think ill ever take a break again. Now i average around 11-12 seconds and still think i need to improve but am not improving in the amount of time id like to. Ive shared my story now lets hear yours. I know theres probably several post about this but im def not taking the time to look that far back for them, and im sure there are several new ppl since then.

I can only vaguely remember the moment I first solved the cube. I was quite happy, but it didn't feel like too euphoric.

It depends on how you define slow.. in terms of cubing, someone who is sub-15 has a completely different definition of slow than someone above 2 minutes

It was a long time ago. Around 1981. On a school bench probably. I still have the cube, I can recall who taught me to solve it, the school is still there, I'm still at the school (!), but the bench has gone.

The first time I took the cube apart was when I was ill with glandular fever, same year, but a few month before. It was around 1 o'clock in the afternoon, and Pebble Mill at One was on the television. The smell of the cube was unique.

People with memories like you are awesome.

Well im talking about the people who have been speedcubing a couple years and are around 10 or 11 average;)

My mom's friend taught me to solve a side in the airport when we were going to alaska for a group trip. When we went to Taiwan a year or two later, he taught me the first layer (instead of just a side) and the second layer. When I came back, I noticed that many of my friends in Chinese school were also doing it for fun, and I asked one of them to write me a paper for the last layer. They used the method that comes with the storebought rubik's cubes. I sat at my desk the next weekend and tried to do it with the sheet in front of me, but just couldnt get the last step to work (they only wrote R' D' R D and didn't tell me what to do with it), but after a few tries, I, with a stroke of luck, had a skip of that step! I remember running from my room and screaming to my parents, but I don't think they really cared (they still don't). Oh, BTW, I was only 8 or 9 years old at the time. However, I don't remember when I solved it without a cheat sheet, so I must've not been particularly happy about it.

Back in 2003, I sat at my table with a partly solved cube and tried to figure out algorithms with pencil, paper and trial-and-error (I didn't call to mind to look after it on the net). I was able to solve the first layer, and someone taught me the second layer and the orientation of the edges. By then I was able to figure out an edge-permutation algorithm, and I tried to find something for the corners.

I was excited when I found an algorithm for orienting the corners (sune-antisune, as I recognised it years later), and one hour later a permutation (An A-perm, but in a way which I still remember but still can not find anywhere in the databases, *evil grin*). That discovery meant that I can finally solve the cube... And that was my very first solving. I am proud that I partly discovered it by myself.

Oh, and it was a green-side-first solve, with corners as step one. :)

Mine was 3 months ago and I remember how happy I was with my self, it took me like 5 min. I have a friend who was giving me a hard time because he could do it in 1min 45 secs. Now I am averaging about 35 sec and still feel insanely slow compared to the rest of you lol

oddly enough, on this day 1 year ago is when I first solved it :D
I remember the night before watching a tutorial, then I watched videos of Feliks and I knew I wanted to do that. So the next day I went to K mart, sat down with a youtube video on how to solve it (I believe it was pogobat's) 1 Hour later solved it. I think my first timed solve was the next day, it was 7 minutes :fp

I first learned how to solve it in 8th grade when my algebra teacher gave me a solution guide from one of those stupid "You Can Do the Cube" sets. I remember I solved it when I got home from school and was so excited that I sent a picture to my cubing friend haha.

I solved the cube first in May of 2010, I actually figured out solution myself. By the time, I knew some people who could solve it under minute. When I discovered how fast top speedcubers are in July 2010, I was quite surprised...

Heh, back then it was "finally the hard work has paid off" (using blockbuilding stuff then beginner ll), now when I get a good average it's "ooh that's nice. But I can do even better."
