Hey guys, whats up?

This is my first post in the cubing community...I have been reading threads here for a while and finally decided register. I met a few people at the Pleaseantville competition too...

So I'm on my 4th month of cubing and I use Petrus's method, I learned mostly from his site and on my own but i have a few questions id like to ask to some of the more advanced users....

The first is really general but I have to ask it anyway, Do you ever make situation decisions about which way to expand the 2x2x2 to a 2x2x3? Even when I see C/E pairs I have a hard time telling if they are useful for the 2x2x2 I have already built so I really only do this when going for fewest moves. I'm on the fence for whether I think I can work this into my speed solve. I have the same issue after fixing bad edges when finishing the f2l so I pretty much have a set way I expand every time....

Also do any of you use some of the more optimal solutions in the last part of step 4 that involve breaking up the 2x2x3? obviously just using R's and U's are very fast and easy to think in so I'm not sure about working these into my solve either.

Last...are any of you also proficient with Fridrich's method? I am defiantly interested in pushing Pertrus's to its limits but I was also wondering how much you could carry over knowing all those optimal corner/edge pairing algorithms.

Thanks a lot guys...I hope to be posting here for a while!

Of course.

You should try to choose the easiest options.

Step 4b alone feels too trivial, I try to solve something in LL at the same time (or, in some rare cases, 4a and 4b together). This usually involves temporarily breaking up the 2x2x3.

I can average sub-20 with Fridrich F2L and 3-look LL (I don't know OLL), although I've never practised it.

thanks johannes

i hoped you would respond, i guess i'll noodle around for a few days before i start timing myself again.

I find myself extending to whatever 2x2x3 block that looks easiest. Unlike Johannes, I'm not color neutral, so I can only extend in two different directions.

During step 4 I find myself pairing up whatever I see first. I never break the 2x2x3 block, although I know Petrus has some cases on his site that break the block and that are way more turn efficient than my solutions. I simply like using R and U moves, and using moves such as F like Petrus suggests would just screw me up.

I am sub 20 with both Fridrich and Petrus, although I use Petrus as my primary method. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask me! Although I'm sure Johannes could answer them way better than I could.
