Permutation Alg

Hey everyone, I am a noob at speedcubing, when i saw the permutation Alg, i saw the permutation Picture and two algs below it that look like this--

what does this mean, i have no idea?
i under 1 alg below to do a permutation but why is their like 7 or sometimes 3 below a one letter permutation?

Those are different ways of permuting that pattern. Just pick one that you like!

Yeah, each line represents and alg. that will permute the pieces shown in the arrow. Perform one of the algs and see the effect on the cube
