One-Answer Big Cubes Question Thread

..So. A speedy 5x5 method. I'm trying to use Yau and I've been getting Sub-4:30ish solves.. I switched from redux and noticed that I've been getting slightly better times. Should I just continue with what I'm comfortable with and learn a few more tricks along the way?

Yes. You might want to learn Yau5 too; it makes looking ahead much easier, meaning you can turn faster. What you do is make sure you solve two adjacent F2L edges in your first 8 edges, and then after you've finished freeslicing you can solve those F2L pairs, making an XX-cross. Lookahead for the last four edges is then very easy, and you get more of the 3x3 stage "skipped" (it's not really skipped since you're just solving it at a different time, but it's close enough :p).

I just got my Shengshou 7x7 and it's extremely stiff. I've heard that it just needs to be broken in. Is that true?

Pretty much. Maybe whack some lube in there. It'll come good though, guaranteed.

Just an FYI though, because a lot of new cubers don't have much of a concept of "breaking in" these days. You can't just do two solves and expect it to be good. Give it twenty solves before it'll be feeling real good (and bear in mind, someone that practices bigcubes would easily do 20 solves in a session or two).

I just did a solve and I can already sense some improvement. Hopefully in a few more solves it will be usable, and I'll be able to get the solves done faster and improve it more.

My first ever 7x7 solve took 30 minutes. I had major issues matching up 1x5 blocks for centers.

Hey guys I average 1:10 on 4x4(yau) and 2:30 on 5x5 (redux). Do you think hoya is worth to switch to? And what about hoya5?

Its supposed to be worth it but why do world class cubers still use yau (and redux for 5x5)? So I dont know if its really better.
Personally, I think Yau is better on 4x4 and Hoya is better on 5x5. If your lookahead with freeslice isn't very good, then Hoya5 could be a better choice.

There's less freeslicing in Hoya5 than Yau5? I'm missing something big here.
Hoya5:
  • F4C
  • three cross edges, not including DF
  • solve BL/BR pairs by pairing them like cross edges (you can pair them in UB too; I find this easier) and then inserting
  • with corner
  • L2C+last cross edge, completing XX-cross
  • Pair L6E, I use AvG, but you don't have to. But since the XX-cross is solved you can't freeslice.
  • 3x3

I used to do Hoya5 very very wrong, then.

I don't recommend switching. Freeslice ftw.

I use hoya on 4x4 and 5x5, just try it out and see if you like it or not, I use hoya on 5x5 because i can go strait to F2l, I do it on 4x4, 6x6,and 7x7 so practice can translate to each other, if you know what I mean

What should my splits be to get sub 3:30 on 6x6? I got a 3:37.87 earlier today with 1:26 / 1:25 / :47 . Also, whenever I get PP, it kills my time. Any advice?

You aren't far off really. My times are pretty inconsistent, from as fast as 2:30 to as slow as 3:30. For me, I usually aim for centres from 1-1:20. If I'm as quick as one minute for centres I'm off to a good start, and if I go over 1:20 I'm not happy. Same sort of thing for edges for me; 1-1:20 as a general statement. My 3x3 sucks and parity makes it a lot worse, so a good time can quickly turn into something crap. Sub35 for 3x3 would be awesome for me; I usually expect 35-45.

So my advice is to keep at it. Practising centres or 3x3 is obviously easier than practising edges, because with edges you have to solve centres first or it's silly. But I never really bothered much with breaking it down and practising individual steps. Just focus as you're solving, and remember to turn as fast as you can and lookahead.

I'm so helpful amirite?
