[Help Thread] Megaminx Discussion

Does anyone have tips on ways to improve with Balint Bodors S2L method. I am now averaging 1:45-50 but the main cause of it is the look ahead with the S2L, I am not switching back to Simon Westlunds method because I am very slow with it. I have only just started minx any (I have only been doing it for a month).

Sorry if this belongs in the Puzzle Modding section, but how should the center pieces on a SS Megaminx be modded (if at all)?

Would modding them help though? And how long does modding the corners + edges take?

depends who is modding it. I fully modded, tension, lubed etc. can be done in less than 2 hours. But CHJ currently holds the world record for being the slowest megaminx modder in history taking weeks to finish the same mod... but Mimmi from Sweden is actually on her way to break CHJ's time for that category :) (short answer: at least 2 hours if you know what you are doing)

And don't know, I never felt the need to do it.

I'm just beginning to get into megaminx, but I can't find pieces for S2L and F2L well. Is there any tutorial that would help me find pieces faster?

Well technically you're not too far off CHJ either... Between the time your raged quit on you dayan, and the time I got to denmark to mod you a SS, I think there was about a month :p

Did you use only sandpaper for the mod? Or something else such as a nail file?

And which fast megaminx solvers besides Balint use Balint's method for S2L?

Hi. I got my first megaminx today. I can get down to the last layer using 3x3 methods as expected but I can't finish it. There seem to be loads of guides out there but none I can find are definitive. I got down to a simple A perm at one point but couldn't find the algorithm. I later found an algorithm to finish a different attempt but there was no key to the notation. Is there a complete guide out there?

Meh, I'm a bit lazy when it comes to megaminx so I never bothered learning all the algs for last layer. I just use the beginner method to solve last layer. So basically I make the second cross, or in this case star, then I put the edges in the right place, then the corners, and then I orient the corners using the R' D' R D alg. Some of the algs need to be adjusted to include the extra layer but it's very intuitive. It's not the fastest nor the most efficient method but it works for me for now. However if you're looking for a good guide to learn last layer this is the one I use: http://www.kungfoomanchu.com/guides/andy-klise-megaminx.pdf
