[Help Thread] Megaminx Discussion

Where do you guys think megaminx is on the scale of hardness in relation to 4x4 and 5x5 ? Easier? Harder?

It's different.

Basically its no harder than a 3x3 imo, since the way you solve it is the same just with more pieces. The only hard bit would then be LL but again, you can use 3x3 beginners methods to solve it just the same. So if anything I would say slightly above 3x3, much below 4x4. But it's not really on the same "axis" as 4 and 5 compared to 3

Colour Recognition for Colour Neutral Solver?

I guess I worded that wrong, I meant how hard it is to get your time down. As it is quite big you would need to have really good look ahead etc to solve it fast, like a 5x5. But I my time on the mega came down much faster, like I'm sub 2:30now. And at Nottingham I was like 4 mins. So would my time come down like the 4x4? Or would it take loads of practice to sub 2, like I'm finding the 5x5.

Ahh I see.
I can't really help you here :b
I've been doing Megaminx since I started speedcubing basically, and my Megaminx times have always sat between my 5x5 and 4x4 times. Right now, Megaminx is starting to catch up to 4x4 again but I'm starting to improve with 4x4 as well, so I would say in that sense, they're about the same to improve on, since all 3 have been going at the same rate since I started.

To be fair on the megaminx - full Fridrich for the 3x3 has 119 algorithms, granted barely anybody uses the F2L algs but -80 algorithms is still quite a commitment.

P.S qqwref you are a demigod to me. Cheers for the timer.
Kudos to you all

Yeah, full Fridrich is already pretty tricky. Keep in mind, though, full OLL and PLL on the Megaminx is something like 500 algs o_0

Aww, thanks :p

Was just watching some of your minesweeper videos. Sheezus....
1) Your clicks seem fluid
2) no flagging. period.
3) sub 50 expert

whatalegend

what key set up do you use for FFR?

how to solve megamix last layer using something like a beginner method

This is the algorithms l need for my beginner method for 3x3x3:
(left) ui li u l u f ui fi
(right) u r ui ri fi u f
(yellow cross) f r u ri ui fi
(yellow edge) r u ri u r 2u ri u
(finish) u r ui li u ri ui l

I did it before but l just forgot the algorithms, l know it is definitely related to the beginner method that l used to solve when l first start. I know that l only need 2 algorithms for the last layer and l am guessing it is specificly related to (yellow edge) r u ri u r 2u ri u and (finish) u r ui li u ri ui l since l can fully use (yellow cross) f r u ri ui fi for a part of the last layer. It is megamix so it is a bit different but not fully different and l can't find it on google.

BUMP

So the two main megaminx S2L methods (Balint's and Simon's) are right now named after the people that popularized the way of solving mega S2L. I think we should actually give them names, and to go even further, I think they should be fun names.

For Balint's method, I propose the name Starfish. I think people can figure out the connection I'm making there...
For Simon's method, I propose the name Jetpack. The reason I chose this name is the shape of the blocks the you make during S2L; they remind me of jetpacks, and jetpacks are freakin' awesome.

Also, Odder's 'method' (EO before L2F) should be called Carrot.

Feel free to propose names. Discussion is fun. :D

For some reason I feel like Balint's method should be called Jetpack.

How do you guys lookahead on these things?

Magic. And sometimes I do slow turning solves and plan-ahead solves (Plan star, close eyes, execute star, repeat with each step). And a lot of practice. But it's mostly magic.

My reasoning was kinda like "After creating those blocks, the face looks like it has two rocket boosters on the side.

Btw, I'm gonna post a megaminx solve vid soon for tips.

That's what my reasoning was for Jetpack, the two CE pairs are the rockets. :P

And go for it!
