[Help Thread] Megaminx Discussion

Hi guys, I am currently averaging between 1:40 and 1:45 and my current short term goal is sub 1:30. However, I am struggling to do this, my biggest problem is efficiency during pairing. Are there any things apart from practice that I can do in order to improve my efficiency? Any help is appreciated :)

Hello,
I just got a shengshou megaminx 2 days ago and just got a pb of 3:52:93. I think i could avg around 4:30?? My lookahead is decent from my 3 by 3 experience but it will improve on megaminx overtime. What do you think I could do to get faster??

What would you say is the best Megaminx available to buy and use out of the box. Meaning a minimum of or preferably no modding or piece sanding. Apart from the regular lubrication and breaking in, of course.
I see the Dayan Megaminx with ridges as being a strong contender. I already have a Shengshou Megaminx and I prefer Megaminxes with that style of turing and feel.
I would like to hear some of your thoughts.
Thanks in advance.

DaYan easily, just lube, tension and break in, and mean while you can slowly mod your current SS. (My main is and old Mefferts with tiles thou :))

I went from averaging 4:30ish to sub 3 in a day or two and basically an Ao12, so for now just sit down and spend an hour just doing some megaminx solves, in a few days you'll be much faster. As for getting farther, I'm not great at megaminx, so can't help you there. Also try playing around with different methods, I tried the classic method for S2L but I found that I felt more in control and my solves felt more structured when I used Balint Bodor's method.

What F2L-S2L-LL splits do I need in order to become sub 1:05?

And should I orient a corner during EO and EP in order to avoid 5 corner cases for CO and 5 cycles for CP?

What should be the ideal splits for sub 2. I currently average 2:20 with splits 47-1:13-20.

Work on your S2L, and then your F2L. Your last layer is pretty good, so it's probably just lookahead and finding pieces that you're having trouble with. Try doing untimed solves where you turn slow enough so that you have very little pauses.

Good luck and have fun :P

Thanks for the reply :D
Till what should I bring down my S2L and F2L to? And also how much time should I spend for the star considering I take 10-12 seconds for it.

If you want to be sub-2:00, F2L = 30 and S2L = 50-1:00. With a 20 sec LL that should be 1:40-1:50. For the star I would suggest looking at example solves on youtube, I know Odder and Simon both have one on their channels.

I am now finally sub 2. Thanks for the tips.
Now, I want to improve further. My current splits are
F2L-35
S2L-1:00-1:10
LL- 25 (It was 25, i wrongly wrote 20)

I see the biggest scope of imrovement is S2L. How should I practise to get it to 50 seconds??
Thanks in advance :D

Anyone have tips for the cross? My cross is really slow, ranging from 5-10 seconds. I average about 1:20 with ~30 second F2L and 10 second last layer.

Blind crosses, trying to use the least amount of moves, and watching example solves.

That helped me so much. I like to think I'm pretty fast at star, I haven't timed star alone in a long time, but I'd say my slowest stars are about 4-5 seconds. But don't work on speed, that will come naturally, 15 moves at most is probably a nice place to start, with efficiency.

I may be annoying a lot of you, but I really want to get into mega. My current splits are-

F2L- 35
S2L- 55
LL- 20 (Ranges from 15-25)

Total- 1:50.

What would be the splits for sub 1:40(current short term goal).
Where is the biggest scope of improvement? And most importantly, how to practise?
Also, my solves vary from 1:35 to 1:55 regularly. Any way to be consistant?
Thanks in advance
