I suggest a "How to Get Faster Thread"...stickied.

Ill work on something including Petrus and frid.

using your guys work brb

Intro-
I will first start with a brief note, by saying that the most important factor is practice. Regardless of how many algorithms you cram or optimize, it has been proven that a sub20 average can be achieved using a basic beginners method. More algorithms are useful to help with your understanding of the cube, and very importantly, your recognition, but these will not get you nearly as far as practice will get you. In spite of this, which is the best way to go about getting those times down, apart from practice alone? I have set out these steps to follow to help you on your way, note this is only a guideline to help you. You do not have to follow these steps, as this is only to guide you.

1:30+

Fridrich-

-Use Leyan’s Beginners Method,
to achieve an average of 1:00-1:19.
You could also achieve sub-1min with this method
If you are still stuck, follow these tips:
-Try to reduce Pauses.
-Lube your cube.
-Decrease Last layer times.
-Practice!!!
You can decrease Last Layer times by improving your recognition for each case.
Note: You can also do inserting from different angles See Macky's take: http://cubefreak.net/easy_fast.html
Est. Time: 3 Weeks

Petrus-

1:00-1:19

Fridrich-

Once you acheive these times;
-I strongly suggest you learn 4 look last layer.
Once you goto that link, DON'T learn F2l!! Just learn the last layer part of it.
This includes:
Edge Orientation(2)
Corner Orientation(1-7)
Edge Permutation(1-4)
Corner Permutation(1-3)
Est. Time: 3 weeks - 2 months

Petrus-

40 – 55

Fridrich-

-I suggest from here that you know learn F2l.
This WILL increase your times at first, but in a couple days it should decrease your times GREATLY!
-Now, practice your F2l.
Est. Time: 2 weeks

Petrus-

30-40

Fridrich-

-I know suggest that you learn ALL THE PLLS!
Est. Time: 2-3 Months

Petrus-

20-30

Fridrich-

-Work on your F2l (May use Algo’s –12second f2l-)
-MASTER (sub 3) all of your PLLs and OLLs that you know.
Est. Time: 3-4 months

Petrus-

20-

Fridrich-

-Learn all 57 OLLs, AND PRACTICE!
Est. Time: ?????

Petrus-

-Lotsofsloths - info
- Dene Beardsley -info
-andrewvo1324 for compiling =P

We need to get some petrus info?

Also i will add some of my knowledge later time for bed*yawn*

What about people who do not want to do Petrus or Fridrich or want to take an alternate route like MGLS or CLL+ELL?.
I suppose its possible to list all the possibilities. It would be kool to have that much info all in one place where everyone could see wouldn't it.
Fridrich, Roux, Petrus, Heise, Watermon or another corners first?
Roux- Basic block building, Learning Corners in 2 seps and then finishing the cube. Then Learning the corner algs. Next Getting the entire first block in inspection? Move on to psuedo blocking and looking ahead to future steps to make them easier?
Petrus- I don't think we should start with saying use a fixed corner. First just learning how to put blocks together not necessarily optimally. Basic bad edge fixing and 3 step last layer. Next practice block building on Johannes's site. Learn some bad edge steps like making sure some are correct as you finish 2x2x3. Learn for LL algs. 5+6 or 6+7...ZBLL?
Just some basic info I don't know how to divide it up...nor would i know what to say for the other methods. Would LL/LS systems be at the end since they apply to multiple methods?

If people know mgls do they really need a guide?

=P

they shoulbe pretty experienced

Yes well, one step at a time, we don't even have a decent Fridrich one yet!
Fridrich OBVIOUSLY has to come first, I don't think anyone would disagree that a MAJORITY of people looking to "get faster" mean with Fridrich. If they are looking at alternatives, then they are probably already reasonable cubers, as said above. Of course, a full "how to get faster" on each of the methods would be optimum, but Fridrich does need to be done first. *cue many arguments*

I don't think people who want to get faster know what the Fridrich Method is, but a lot of layer by layer (beginner) methods are simplified Fridrich so I guess you are right.

Hey Dene, right now, as I'm posting this, I see your have 999 posts! I wonder when you're going to make 1000.....

I'll answer your cue arguments :-) People mean Fridrich yes but do they know that other methods can be just as fast? One does not have to know how to solve Fridrich in order to learn a blockbuilding method...
I think anything we put up should OBVIOUSLY not be biased toward any method but portray them all as equally viable options :-)

I think there should be a different "how to get faster" guide for each different method. So, "at what time should I start doing X?" sort of questions can be answered separately in each different guide.

Here are some revisions I think will make it better.

I will first start with a brief note, by saying that the most important factor is practice. Maybe put a video showing that a sub 20 average with beginner's method is possible? How about Erik's Sub 20 average with LBL,and 4LLL? Also, I think we should add the some links for the F2L, OLL, and PLL algorithms.

Revised Version:

Here's a video of one of the top cubers, Erik Akkersdijk, getting a sub 20 average only using the beginner's method.

Mabye add a link of Leyan's Beginner Method?

How about ALSO adding a tutorial video on the beginner method so people have a choice learning from? I think most people starting out would prefer a video tutorial. I think Badmephisto's beginner tutorial is great, also Tyson Mao's video tutorial and Bob Burton's video tutorial. I personally think Badmephisto's is the best at explaining.

Also, what about sanding and breaking in your cube? I know it's not that popular but I tried it and I can easily spin one side of my cube 360 degrees again and again with my finger. Here are youtube videos of how to sand your cube, break it in, and lubricate it.

On the times on top of each step, is that your goal time or your current time? That's confusing and I can't figure it out. Maye writing a goal time and a separate current time? Also, shouldn't we put a thing about solving the cross on the bottom? Because Leyan's Beginner method tells you to solve the cross on the top....

Revised Version:
Current Average: 1:30+ or don't know how to solve
Goal Average: 1:00-1:19
Use Leyan’s Beginners Method, or Badmephisto's Youtube Video Tutorial.
You could also achieve sub-1min with thse method
If you are still stuck, follow these tips:
-Try to reduce Pauses.
-Sand, Break in, and Lubricate Your Cube (In that order).
-Decrease Last layer times.
-Practice!!!
You can decrease Last Layer times by improving your recognition for each case.
-Make sure you solve the cross on the bottom. It will help you later. For now, try to get a cross in an average of less than 10 seconds on the Bottom of the cube. Here are some links which will help you:

There's no link when you say learn 4 Look last layer...
Mabye put the letter names of the permutations you need to know?
Will that really take you 3-weeks to 2 months? Seriously? 2 months for 16 algorithms? Some people learn that many in like 3 days.. I would say 3 weeks to a month and a half (2 week difference)
Revised Version

Current Average: 1:00-1:19
Goal Average: 40 - 50 seconds
Once you acheive these times;
-I strongly suggest you learn 4 look last layer.
-DO NOT learn an F2L yet.
Edge Orientation - 2 algorithms
Corner Orientation - 7 algorithms
Edge Permutation - 4 algorithms - Ua, Ub, Zb, H
Corner Permutation - 3 Algorithms Aa, Ab, E
Estimation Time: 3 weeks - 1 1/2 months

40 – 55

Fridrich-

-I suggest from here that you know learn F2l.
This WILL increase your times at first, but in a couple days it should decrease your times GREATLY!
-Now, practice your F2l.
Est. Time: 2 weeks

I think you're talking about intuitive F2L right? Or algorithms F2L? Mostly likely intutive so I think you should add where to learn intuitive F2L. A video that I think is greate at teaching it is once again Badmephisto's Intuitive F2L Video.
Also, the thing about it speeding up your times is a little bit confusing.

Revised Version:

Current Average: 40-55 seconds
Goal Average: 30-40 seconds
-Now learn intuitive First Two Layers (F2L).
-Your times will temporarily get worse, but after a few days of practicing, they will become better greatly!
-Practice your F2L, and never give up!
Estimation Time: 2 Weeks

30-40

Fridrich-

-I know suggest that you learn ALL THE PLLS!
Est. Time: 2-3 Months

I'll put a link of where to get different algorithms for all the PLL cases.

Revised Version:

Current Average:30-40 seconds
Goal Average20-30 seconds
-Now, learn all the PLLs - 21 Algorithms (Links where to learn them will be at the bottom of this post)
Estimation Time: 2-3 Months

20-30

Fridrich-

-Work on your F2l (May use Algo’s –12second f2l-)
-MASTER (sub 3) all of your PLLs and OLLs that you know.
Est. Time: 3-4 months

What do you mean by "Algo's 12 second F2L" Is Algo a name or is it an abbreviation for algorithm? I'm assuming it's algorithm, but other people may get confused. Also maybe get the cross really fast too.

Revised Version:

Current Average: 20-30 seconds
Goal Average: Sub 20 seconds
-Work on your F2L, maybe learn the algorithms. (Links for F2L algorithms at the bottom of this post)
-Master all your PLLs and OLLs that you know. Meaning optimize it to your maximum speed, try to use the triggers, and try to get all of them under 3 seconds.
-Get your cross sub 5 seconds consistently
Estimation Time: 3-4 Months

20-

Fridrich-

-Learn all 57 OLLs, AND PRACTICE!
Est. Time: ?????

Revised Version:
Current Average: Sub 20 Seconds
Goal Average: 15 Seconds or less
-Master your F2L, try to get it down to sub 12 seconds average
-Get your cross to sub 2 seconds average
-Learn the rest of the OLLs! - 57 algorithms (Note that you should COMPLETELY master everything else before learning these, as they will only help you by about 2 seconds or less)

Not all Rubik's brands are slow... I have felt some very nice Rubik's brand cubes. Of course if they have a bad cube they should get a new one. To me it just seems as written slow is attached to the brand of the cube and not to the cube itself.

I don't think recommedning any type of cube should be in there. As the old story goes, Mr. Nakajima uses a store bought cube, and so do I, and I average sub19 now :p
