I'm as new as it gets i think. I have a frustrating cube I got from a department store many years ago and never learned to solve until yesterday morning. That was the first time I solved it without a "cheat sheet" and I've solved about 20-30 times since then. The last time took a little over 2 min with a lot of the cube getting stuck :( I tried lubing the thing and it got MUCH worse. I ended up taking it apart and washing it with soap to get the lube off. After it dried and i put it together it was ok again. I guess I can't expect performance out of a bad cube...

I have a Shengshou Aurora and a QiYi Thunderclap coming in the mail though! I should get the QiYi by this weekend and the aurora will be a while because it's on the slow boat from China. Whichever of the two I like less will live in my desk at work. I'll be moving on from the beginner method soon; so, I'm sure I'll probably have questions for the experts!

When I'm not learning on the cube I'm probably playing guitar or throwing a yoyo. I'm no pro; but, not terrible either... on both, the guitar and the yoyo

Thanks for the tip! I just solved a few times starting with whatever color was setup for an easy cross... It's a little tricky, but I think I can get used to it.

Welcome to the forums! :)

Be sure to try out a variety of methods before specializing such as CFOP, ZZ, SSC and Roux (maybe even PCMS!)

I hope you enjoy your time here! ;)

First a southern Howdy from the appalachian Mountains! I'm no expert but I figured I might as well throw my advice in. The thunderclap isn't my main but it is a great cube and lots of people like it. As a beginner tensioning the cube probably isn't needed and for lube I'd recommend slowing it down a bit to make it more controllable. Traxxas is a good choice you can get 50k from cube stores but when I want to make a cube more controllable I prefer traxxis 10k from amazon. And learning color nuetrality is best from the start like everyone else already mentioned. As for a speed solving method cfop is a good place to start because of the vast number a tutorials and tips&tricks videos out there but no method is truely better than another so try some different ones and stick with what you like best.
