I know how to do very simple x-crosses I have tried to improve them but all the videos and guides on the internet don't make sense to me. If anybody can help I would be greatful thanks.

You don't need to do them all the time
Also, building xcrosses can't be learnt from a video imo. You have to play around with your cube, do slow solves and pick up a few tricks from intuition here and there since xcross is a fairly intuitive concept imho.
Also, watching example solves of top cubers might help.
Here’s one case where learning a new method helps with CFOP. If you learn Petrus, it will help you figure out how to build a 2x2x2 block efficiently, which is part of making an X-Cross. Ever since I started learning new methods, it made my CFOP times a few seconds faster! You might even decide to main a new method along the way!

I didn’t really use a tutorial, I just looked at a lot of example solves. The basic steps are to solve a 2x2x2 block, then extend it into a 2x2x3 block, then do EO either intuitively or algorithmically (algs can be found here, although some of them aren’t the best), then finish off with whatever last layer that you want to. You can do OCLL > PLL, COLL > EPLL, or ZBLL. Try looking at the 3x3 Example Solve Thread and the Petrus Example Solve Thread to get an idea of what the steps are. There are some great solutions by absolute legends like @Pyjam as well as many others.
