I started cubing using the little 7-step guide that came with my cube. it used Green as the D layer. i got used to it and stuck with it. i soon after noticed that most everyone uses White as the D layer. Arguably, White is FAR easier to spot than is Green.

any thoughts?

after all this time, is it worth it for me to switch to using White as my D layer? are the benefits significant?

Not only do you get the benefit of white for the D layer, but yellow stands out very nicely when solving the LL.

Maybe it doens't make a big difference.

I don't think it would be *that* hard to switch, though, so you dont have much to lose.

My 2 cents

It doesn't really matter much, I think... However, if you get used to solving the cube with green on the D face, you might have a hard time to follow fast tricks that people show you, when they have the white face on the bottom... That would be an argument to start with white :).

You know...Macky uses Japanese Colour Scheme and use blue as D face, and white as LL (which is like yellow as cross, and white as LL for us). So, he just stick to the original one. Just choose which ever you feel is more comfortable.

By the way, Jason Thong makes a cross on any side! He just scaned to see which side has the best/easiest solution to the cross and F2L. That's going to be hard to master quickly though.

well, i tried to use white bottom layer solve and basically doubled my time (from 47 sec avg to over 1:30). after 1 year of cubing, i am completely used to GREEN bottom and BLUE top and have no major problems with it. and i can easily translate diagrams/algs from the web that are using a different scheme. so, i'm sticking with what i know.

Thanks for the input!

I agree with Frank, just stick with the colors you use..I learned to solve with yellow and white as my LL. But then I went crazy and took off red, blue and green so I could put pink, purple and light blue(currently LL)..and it took me a forever to adjust to light blue for my last layer.
