Cubing Club Ideas and Discussion

A QJ 3x3 isn't even that good is it?

Not to mention the fact they can't do a ton of them. They only have 29 in stock, I have like 100

I think he's decided that a YJ Finhop is what he's getting :p It's the cheapest he can find that is decent (I think) at $4 each

Yep, thats the plan. And i am in 6th grade, so its all gonna be 6th grade i think...

EDIT: Id rather do finhops. Oh, and u r quite the business man theZcuber ;)
Tomorrow i am having a 'meeting' sort of thing with the teacher supervisor (whos also the gifted teacher and seems really enthusiastic about this) tomorrow with my best friend who is also running the club. And hes not the assistant or anything btw. I guess u can say that we have equal ownership. Im just a little faster and have been cubing longer than him.

Another thing is that theres a comp comin up in 2 weeks thats like an hour and a half away, so im hoping i can teach atleast some of them by then and maybe get them to go. Although i dont know if this is a daily ir weekly sorta thing if u know what i mean, so i doubt it... Thats my little update dor tonight :)

By the way, post all annoying comments from the kids in the cubing club in the Non-Cubers Say the Darndest Things thread please?

that ^

and try to pick a method to teach. if you have too many people at one meeting and you can't teach all of them at the same time, try to find someone else to teach so that there's smaller groups. i personally find one to three people at a time pretty good because if they do an algorithm wrong you can immediately tell them that they did R instead of R' or something.

I just realized that I thought I made up a new F2L method, but it is just keyhole =[

If they get really into it (1:30 or under) I will definitely tell them about the forums =D
I am probably gonna do sexy or LBL. Which one would be easier for a 6th grader to learn???

Sexy method or 8355 method, kind of the same thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5cN9Rd0bcs&feature=channel_video_title

EDIT: nevermind. If you just teach them Sexy method they might not get into more advanced methods later on.

Ya, I am thinking the way I learned, I taught my bff, and how he taught his two brothers. Dan Brown's method, but the normal notation. I hate i's...

I have a really big update though! I just had a meeting sort of thing with my teacher adviser, and I am planning on doing some interesting things, especially to non-cubers. 1) We are planning on doing a huge http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQJTlev0HYc&feature=relmfu type thing. The cubes should come from youcandothecube.com, where it's free to get 100 or 225 cubes to make cube art. Of course, you must return it, and pay for missing cubes, etc. But it's still really awesome! Oh, and my teacher, after researching some stuff, got this idea.
2) The first intro day is going to be on September 30, so I really need ideas for that! I will have 45 minutes to introduce them to cubing, but I'm not going to teach them on that day! So please suggest some ideas!
3) We can only do the club about twice a month, which is because of the adviser's schedule, I think. But it's better than never having it at all!

So if you have any more ideas, be sure to tell me! I probably not be ordering the cubes for another couple weeks, theZcuber. Sorry, I just have absolutely no idea how much to get! Btw, this is only a 6th grade club, so think 6th!!! The most we can do in the class at once, is about 25-30 kids (seats wise), so it could be extremely difficult. I know a few kids who are planning on signing up, but the sign up isn't ready yet, and we still have to pay the $100. That's really it. If you have any ideas, suggestions, tips, or questions, just post a comment!

Oh yeah, you are right. anyway it would be better to tell them about the advanced methods and beginner methods.

Collin, print out the FAQ in the link I posted or something!

i am thinking that I will print out an alg. sheet since it's only twice a month, and if they wanted to practice at home... you know what I mean. But I will definitely check that out. The only problem with the printing is that it won't be so easy to simply click on links.

Seats? You know, we aren't going to teach them cube theory (except commutators and conjugates would be cool).

Ya, it's just a small classroom, and I think it has like 28 desks, which is probably where everyone will sit during a lesson type thing. Another really awesome thing about this, is that I can use a smartboard in the room, which could be EXTREMELY helpful.

In the beginning, I don't want to bore them, but I definitely think we could go a little bit into commutators. But atm, I just wanna keep it simple. :)

Rubik's cubes are honestly fine if you break them in .

If they have them, than they can use it, but I can totally see them wanting a new, better cube, that's also a lot cheaper. And for those who don't own Rubik's Brands, then it's only like $4 compared to the much worse Rubik's Brands for like $10! But if you do break a Rubik's Brand in, they are pretty okay, but I don't think many of the kids are serious enough to break them in as much as I heard 5BLD has...

If you teach cubing as a subject, it might be boring. Will you be able to move desks away to give the club a more fun feel? Though a smartboard (AND AN INTRODUCTION TO SPEEDCUBING FOR BEGINNERS) would be good.l
