Another website I've been working on, the main content isn't ready yet but I'm putting a customized google search on it for now:

http://cubeguide.com/

Same idea as the old cube google, using google's customized search to search only certain sites. But with an easier address, more and more current sites, and in English.

The search shall stay on the site but once the main content is ready, the search box will be smaller and on the side (hope I can still show the results on a full width page then, haven't checked that out yet).

It's just like a Google with everything cube related. Nicely done, and now we cubers can look up stuff without irrelevent things popping out randomly. Thanks Stefan!

A directory of indexed sites would be nice.

Yes, you will be able to if you're going to be using Google's CSE.

If Google offers that, I'll show it as soon as I find out how. But I'll get it done somehow. For now, this is the current list copied manually:

Just a suggestion: Is RouxCentral in there? I didn't see it, and it has a lot of info on the Roux method.

It is now. Thanks.

AJAX is nice, but I can't navigate my results. URL hash, at least?

Anyhow, I suggest adding a textbox for users to submit cube sites (for your manual review, for now). The reason every other cube search failed is that it didn't get updated properly for a userbase to grow. I think people would start to use cubeguide.com (having a separate domain is great, by the way) if they see that it will adapt to their needs and requests.

Mac again? Argh. Does normal Google work for you?

Certainly. The system lets me invite "contributors", but apparently it requires them to have a google account and it's also not supervised, so I can't make it public without fearing people would mess it up. I'll look for more, suggest it to them, or do something myself. Or I could just invite some competent others, but I really prefer to let *everybody* make suggestions.

I know. I think that's the other big reason the old cube google somewhat failed (it works, but how many people use it?)... cause it's hard to find/remember.

I know "Googling" is a verb now, but I've never heard somebody refer to a search engine as "a Google." :p

Yes. Same behavior in Firefox (which has become unacceptably slow, so I've stopped using it), Chrome, and Safari: URL doesn't change upon search. Is that intended at all?

Wow, looks like there's a lot of cubing related info on DealExtreme.

It's one of the sites I included, yes. None of the searches I tried so far had an overwhelming number of dealextreme results, though. Did you see too many? If so, what did you search for?

Currently I have some big community sites and personal websites I remembered, as well as the cubing forums and shops I also have on speedcubes.net. I think it should work ok, when searching for cubing terms like "ZBLL" it should show our sites, when searching for puzzle names like "DaYan" it's a mix of us and shops, and I think that's ok. I have a few rough ideas for improvement, will check out what google supports.

Not intended by me, at least. If you look at the source code of the page, you'll see a block with a div tag and some javascript. That block was provided by Google and I only modified the div style. Will look for possible other ways.

Any idea why it doesn't work for you?
Any other Mac users here? Does it work for you (including moving to pages >1)?

Oha, you misunderstood me. I meant "I can't manipulate multiple searches/pages of results using native browser navigation," which would be very desirable.

I guess I did misunderstand. You mean like searching "F2L", then "Edison", then hitting the browser's back button? Right, that doesn't work for me, either. That's indeed a bit annoying. I'm learning Google's Web Toolkit as well and I've seen them address this particular issue, could imagine their custom search to support it.

Working now on showing the current list of sites and the possibility to suggest more sites.

I tried BH and M2. Every other result is something unrelated from DealExtreme. Might happen with several acronyms, or I might just have been unlucky that there's a chain of bluetooth headsets called BH, and memory sticks called M2.

There's now a link on the top to list the searched sites and suggest more. Gets you here:
http://cubeguide.com/sites.php

I tried BH and M2.
Thanks. For me, M2 works well, only two of the top 10 results are DealExtreme. But BH indeed is bad thanks to bluetooth headsets (argh). I'll try to restrict the searches inside the shops or maybe offer two separate searches, one without the shops.
