Corner Cutting Help

Quite, Cut Corners, Smooth Cube.

Hi, I'm looking for a cube that is quite, cuts corners and smooth.
Any suggestions

guhong corner cutting

I got my DIY guhong and lubix, as i like to make my own cubes. I followed the mod tutorial on YouTube to the T, and i corner cutting have gone worse from a standard guhong.

I was wondering is this normal?
Is it because i applied too much lubix?

Corner cutting is more of a tenorion thing than a lube thing. Still, work the lube in well. Lubix will take a while to get slick if you've put too much. Then, if things are still bad, try fiddling with the tensions. Make sure all of them are perfectly equal.

What's wrong with my GuHong?

I got a GuHong after seeing the recommendations on this forum and after seeing my friend's. I wanted a good cube to start speedcubing (I started recently, my averages are around a minute). It arrived 2-3 weeks ago (I got a white version from Lightake). The first thing I noticed was that the pieces themselves were not very well put together. I took it apart (before any lubing or anything) and I saw that the two halves of each piece, but mainly corner pieces, had a small, but noticeable, gap between them.
I did a bunch of solves to sort of break it in and then I took it to my friend so he could lube it. He used lubix and sort of looked like he knew what he was doing, applying some on the stretchy parts of the core and a tiny bit on the surface of one of the pieces themselves, and then spread it by just turning it a lot. So I took it home and did some more solves. Here's what I found:

- I can't get it to cut the advertised 45 degree cutting. Even for smaller angles, it just locks up and makes a big hole to look inside the cube, and the edge piece that is on the top (when doing a R' turn) looks ready to jump out.
- It simply isn't as smooth as his, which is also a GuHong (but black). It is already quite loose and it is not near as smooth.
- This one worries my the worst. After seeing all these reviews saying its very hard if to pop this cube, mine pops regularly. It could just be that I am very much a beginner and I turn the cube roughly, but even my friend with a GuHong has had it pop. I think it coincides with the fact that it locks up so much. When I play with my friends's cube, there is never a thought in my mind that it'll pop. I just transitions so smoothly that I never feel that a piece is in danger of popping. Mine, I have to make sure not to too anything too hard or fast (which is probably a big beginner mistake) or else I risk popping it or locking it up.

I am really starting to think that I got a counterfeit or some defect (not that Lightake would do that, but still) because I bought the cube, broke it in with a lot of solves, lubed it, and it performs so much worse then my friend's GuHong.

take it back to your friend and have him tension it. there are screws underneath the centercaps. they probably need to be tightened (evenly). also, the molding process is not perfect, it takes a little bit of time for the minor imperfections in the plastic to work themselves out. most new cubes feel rough and sometimes can lockup on these imperfections. there are some guhongs that can cut godly angles, but cutting corners to that extent is fairly irrelevant. if you bought from lightake, the chances you recieved a fake is very minimal.

@maggot: yes, I have adjusted the screws underneath the centre caps. I currently have them semi-loose so that I can achieve some kind of speed, but I kind of have to be careful not to pop it. EDIT: Also, I've tried to make them as even as possible but I just did it based on feel.

@gundamslicer: I'm not sure what you mean. Elaborate?

My GuHong doesn't cut 45 degrees. To be honest, you don't really need 45 degree corner cutting unless your the world's laziest turner. My Stickerless GuHong cuts way over 45, but I still get the same times as with my regular GuHong.

You might just have to get used to the feel and break it in. You may wan to tighten it because mine's fast but I never have popping problems.

@Vinny: OK, 45 degree corner cutting isn't that normal. But try this (with green in front and white on top): turn the U face CCW so that the orange-green-white corner aligns with the space between the 1st column and 2nd column of green. That, for me, works 0% of the time to to a R'. Also, when you do a harsh movement, does it pop? I just just surprised at the first time it popped after being touted the unpoppable cube.

You're a poet yet you don't knowit!

The gap between the pieces soon fills up with gunk and doesn't seem to bother me. Just solve it a couple of hundred times and keep adjusting the tension until you get a balance between popping and looseness.

EDIT: Also, I've tried to make them as even as possible but I just did it based on feel.

Not a good way to tune the tension.
Better way:

Remove all cubies (except the centre pieces) and caps. Gently pull the a centre piece and you can see the gap between the core and the piece. Tension all the pieces using the "same" gap distance.

FYI - I was lazy and tensioned the cube based on feel. One day, I checked the gap between the core and the centre pieces and found that they were all of different lengths! Once I got the gap-distance the same, the cube turns much better.

My black Guhong can turn 45 degs at medium tension. Any tighter the degs decrease. Any looser, it may pop.

How did you all lube yours? I feel that maybe there needs to be some lube on the "internal" parts of the cubies that have the little "legs". I find that is what is causing the lock-ups.
