I believe in myself.
Ever since I started speedcubing, I've always maintained the belief that I can be just as fast as the best speedcubers out there (our faster!). I've never considered where my time limitations would be, because I've always believed that if someone else can be so fast, then I can get there as well. There was no "maybe sub-25 or sub-20, but never sub-15!", or anything of that sort. Now I'm sub-11, and I've got plenty of room to improve.
Believe in yourself, too!

Word to the wise: Not that I want to rush you all, but hurry up! The sooner you drop the solve times, the closer you get to top of the ranks. Why sub-8 in 5 years, when you can sub-8 now? Have fun! :tu
 
I'm sure I could be a top cuber, but that doesn't mean I'm going to put in the work to become one. Cubing has always been a fun hobby for me, and I'm definitely glad I got into it, but it's not enough of a priority for me to get world-class or anything. And that's okay, I've got other things I would rather use my time on :)
 
i am 100% sure i could, but there is just too much important stuff in my life to fully commit myself to cubing. I am sure from experience that with enough practice i can become just as good as other top cubers, but i dont feel its worth to put all the work in it.
 
Absolutly not. I had a hobby earlier (a strategic game) which in I was the best of the world for years. It took a LOT of time to achiece and even MORE to maintain that. I just don't have the motivation even to try to be world class cuber :)

Now this I find very interesting. I guess the dexterity isn't an issue - as Marcel says, there are older cubers who can still go fast, but at what age did they learn? Is it a question of conditioning, rather than dexterity?

Personally, I spend less than an hour a day cubing, sometimes not at all on weekends. I love cubing, but have more important things, like a job and family. I'm happy with my speed, and will continue to learn, and progress at my own pace.

My point isn't that us oldies should practice more, I just think the misconception is rife that older cubers CAN'T go fast, when in reality it's more a matter of us maybe not caring as much about speed, and getting fast on a hurry. I'd like to think that my hands and mind have the potential to be sub 8, even if, in reality, I never get within 10 seconds of that!
 
When I became sub-20 in around 2 1/2 months, I thought I would become the next Feliks. But now after a 1/2 year of cubing I'm starting to lose interest in it, and have not been practising everyday, or in some cases even every week. I average around 16 seconds now, whereas a month ago it was more 15ish. I hope I will get my cubing addiction back, but I don't see this happening in the next few months.

I wanted to get into the top 100 for 3x3 but then quit for like half a year. Then after I came back (April) I found out about the megaminx, people are already too fast at pyraminx so I thought, why not try for NR on megaminx? :)

Maybe the two aren't easily separated. I took a 25 year break from playing piano and went back to it in my late 30s. I found the same pieces I played as a kid. It took me a lot more practice than I ever put in as a kid, to play them well; but learning new pieces was an order of magnitude more difficult again. There was some muscle memory remaining for the familiar pieces, even after such a long break, but developing new dexterity and muscle memory for new pieces was very much harder.
 
I think I could be, but I have two jobs and dont have that much time or effort to put into it to become world class. Im sure by the time I get to sub 9, It will be in a year or two and sub 9 wont even be world class then. Although I will be satisfied when I get to sub-10, at the same time thought I thought id be satisfied when I got to sub 12 and now im there and still think I'm slow.
 
I've been cubing for about 2-3 months, and as soon as I moved from store-bought to Zhanchi, my times descended rapidly. I am now sub-40 and my PB single is 21.28, so can't complain really. And yeah, I think anyone can be the best in the world at something, it just takes time and a heck of a lot of practice :)
 
For me, definately not 3x3, but possibly something like Pyraminx (I really need to practice more). I raged so much when they took away Magic :P I would have easily been in the top 20 if I had gone to a comp.
 
I believe anything is possible, so if I really wanted to, I could get to top 20. I guess my goal is to be top 100 for the 3x3 for right now, but I don't even think that will happen for another couple years.
