So i started cubing again 2 days ago( haven't been for 5 years) and my time is about 3 minutes with the beginners method. Just thinking about how people get sub-10 discourages me alot, I have no idea how to start. I have looked into starting f2l, but i am not sure if I am ready, i dont even know if my execution of the cross is correct. What should i practice first? Continue with beginners method till i perfect it? Practice my cross? Which algorithims to learn first? Any videos that can help me transition into intermediate? Cutting my time in half is not something i can see happening very soon... Yes, everyone has to start somewhere don't they?

hmm use this as you guide/schedule/step to learn just to keep you organized of what to learn first :

I used this as a guide for me and it's working well ( i'm currently at step 5 :p ) and if you're really dedicated you can get around 30 or 20 secs in no time ( 2-4 weeks /1 month ) the hard part is to get under 20 ( for most people )...

It took me a really long time to be sub minute, around 4 or 5 months. I would continue the begginers method until you are around a minute then start to learn F2L. Practice your cross. Here is video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EYPXTetHX4
I was around your time in February, I am now 9 months later averaging around 19-20 and I only know half the PLLs and 2 look OLL. Just keep practicing and you will be sub minute in no time!

This is what I did. I got sub 50 in a month using this and PRACTISING A LOT.

1. Get Beginner's method around 1:40 - 2:00
2. Learn and practise F2L.
3. Learn 2 Look OLL/PLL.
4. Learn how to solve a cross properly (on bottom).
5. Learn full PLL.

A few more things:

  • This isn't a solid method, just a guideline to give you an idea of what you want to do.
  • After that, you can do whatever you like. At the moment, I'm learning how to do my cross blindfolded but it is really up to you.
  • You don't need to absolutely perfect one step before moving up, it's a waste of time imo.
  • Try experimenting with what you like
  • I suggest looking at badmephisto's youtube and his website. He really is beginner-friendly and has some good intermediate/advanced videos once you're better.

Wb to cubing. :)

I can't just get how you guys can go sub-30 in, like 3 months, I have been cubing for a year but, I am still inconsistent about my times and struggling to get consistent sub-30 avg ( I was on/off for cubing anyway)

Anyway, here's what I did

Get used to the beginner's method first, get about sub 1 minute

Make sure to solve cross on bottom!!
Then, slowly, practice F2L ( I have used Badmephisto's tutorial, I also recommend you the http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?26066-RiDo-s-Hunting-Story-for-F2L-No-intuition-or-alg-memorization-required-(Videos), no algs, and stuff, easy to understand), this will worsen your times, but it will return much faster, Do not time your solves first, familiarize yourself with every case in F2L. Then, time your solves when you feel comfortable already

When you are comfortable with your F2L, learn 4 look last layer (2 LOOK OLL & 2 LOOK PLL)

Practice, practice practice! Especially your cross, do it in 3~4 seconds at most and practice F2L!!!

You don't really get sub-30 or sub-10 overnight, it takes, time, skill, patience, and courage and determination lols.

Goodluck!!

I am nearing averaging sub 30 now. I started somewhere around the beginning of september. so in maybe 2-2.5 months I went from never touching the cube to avg of around 30.

The way i did it was : Learn beginners method in the morning ,solve thru the day and in the evening learn how to do F2L. Practice practice practice any dead time you have and look how pieces move while you solve. If you mess something up look at the cube and try to figure out how to go back to where you where right before messing up. 2look OLL/PLL and it isnt hard to learn at all. With F2L basic knowledge and 2look OLL/PLL (wich should take you 1-2weeks to learn) you will have the amunition to get to sub 40. maybe even sub 30. So just practice F2L and those algs.

All I did was solve the cube every chance I got. Alot in public. Doing public solves will make you slow down a bit because you don't feel like pissing everyone off with alot of noise, making you practice look-ahead without even noticing it .

I'm not saying that you will get sub30 in 3 months since everyone has different learning curves, I'm just saying that this was the road i followed.

I have been close to averaging sub 30 consistently for a week or 2 now and have been learning full PLL (except G perms :d) I need to practice my cross/look-ahead more.. ^^

This is what I did.

- Learnt beginners LBL method and practiced for a few weeks until I averaged, 1:10 - 1:20
- During that time I also learnt the basic concept of intuitive F2L, still averaged 1:10 -1:20 with F2L
- From that I learnt 2LOLL (2 look OLL) and started learning PLLs randomly (I never learnt 4LLL but you should)
- Then on I practiced quite a bit and my times starting to go below 1 min.
- I started beating my PBs almost everyday, I kept continuing to learn the PLLs one by one
- With the more algs I knew, the faster I got
- Look ahead and TPS played a role in getting sub 30.
- I was stuck on the 20 sec barrier for a loooooong time, a few months.
- I looked more deeply into look ahead, learnt a few more OLLs
- You also should ask faster cubers for advice and tips
- Its been a year now and I'm quite close to sub 15.

Use this to help you structure your improvement.

Depending on how much practice, you will drop your times in no time.

As you get faster it will be harder to improve, but keep practicing and you'll get faster and faster.

I got a Dayan speedcube when I was averaging 1:10 secs

After I got it, I learned 4LLL

Then I learned intuitive F2L

Right now, around 7 months after starting cubing, I'm averaging ~24 secs

No work on 2LLL yet, no real serious work attempting to get better. It just happened as I did it casually.

You don't remember anything about cubing from 5 years ago?

I picked cubing back up Mid-July, and my best average of 50 currently is 18.223, so don't be discouraged, it just takes a bit of practice to get alright times.. I don't remember how long sub-30 took me :P
