[Help Thread] Advice and Tips for Competitions

Yeah I've learned the hard way not to get too nervous. I was fine until the actual solve, I kept locking up and got really bad times. My friend was so nervous he averages 30 seconds and he got an average of about a minute.

Just don't think of it as people watching you. Try to picture yourself at home solving your cubes regularly.

Upcoming Competition Tips??

So I have my first competition tomorrow. Does anyone have any tips or anything to say?

Any specific tips for BLD or FMC?

Note: Already watched Noah's video so don't post it.

Note2: Ben. Don't post it.

Take a deep breath before each solve.

Think to yourself: "It's just cubing"

Don't care about your time, just try to do a smooth solve.

You already obviously care too much cuz you posted this thread. Just calm down.

dude I just had a vision

3x3 round 1, solve 4

PLL is gonna be the g-perm that starts with RUR', no AUF

may the prophecy be with you. good luck

i went to one so far and my experience is this: my hands were shaking slightly which increased lock ups. i was finger tricking a 2x2 before 3x3 round so it took 2 solves to reach my full 3x3 zhanchi finger trick ability :), my cube had to be perfect and if i made any modifications to it before the comp for example lube with maru so its super fast; then i cant get used to the new feeling, and that if i got a sub 20 (good for me) i would be like " yeah! sub 20!" and other people would be like... " eww, sub 20 is so last yeeear"

so my advice would be:
control your nerves- dont be to nervous but at the same time dont be to laid back.
use a cube you are going to use- before you get called up to the table
get used to your cube- for obvious reasons
be your self- ignore what others think and dont attempt to show of or be faster than you are

good luck

^This. But hopefully it's all nice and lubed already. Don't do anything to your cube now that will make it feel different than what you're used to. I think I tried to lube mine about a week before the comp. Personally, I don't think I do very well under pressure so I gave myself low expectations on purpose (I told myself I'd be happy with a sub-20 average). I decided that since it was my first comp I would worry more about having fun and being simply happy to be "official". My first 3x3 solve I took it at a relaxed pace (they don't give me the best times but they give me decent times rather than rushing and losing all look ahead ability).

For me, the biggest change going from home to comp was the inspection. Make sure to practice with a 15 second timer, and try to find one that will give you the standard 8 and 12 second warnings. Practice with a stack mat timer if you have one. If you don't, make sure you're in the habit of putting the cube down and start the timer with hands off. I found that the act of putting the cube down caused me to break concentration because I had a bad habit of starting the timer with the cube in my hand and wasn't used to it.

Ok. I practice that a lot. But I need to remember not to karate chop stop the timer.

Don't worry a lot about what times you get. Don't learn anything new very close to the competition because you will only mess it up during official solves. Just have fun. Good luck!
