[Help Thread] Megaminx Discussion

Meh, I'm a bit lazy when it comes to megaminx so I never bothered learning all the algs for last layer. I just use the beginner method to solve last layer. So basically I make the second cross, or in this case star, then I put the edges in the right place, then the corners, and then I orient the corners using the R' D' R D alg. Some of the algs need to be adjusted to include the extra layer but it's very intuitive. It's not the fastest nor the most efficient method but it works for me for now. However if you're looking for a good guide to learn last layer this is the one I use: http://www.kungfoomanchu.com/guides/andy-klise-megaminx.pdf

I saw that one but got confused by the corner permutation notation (the Ds and the Rs in brackets). Off to bed now. Will try with a fresh mind tomorrow.

Thanks for the response.

Edit:
I can't believe how much time I'm wasting trying to work this out. Is anyone able to look at Tina's link and explain what the notation in the first Permute Edges alg means please? I assume that most of it is straightforward face turns but I don't know what to do with the minus symbol.

Thank you. I can now solve the puzzle unassisted. I too am a Scot living in England (since I was 2). Who is your World Cup team? As a Liverpool fan I have gone for Uruguay.

PS I really enjoy your vids. Speed I can only dream of.

It's an old username.

I'm actually half Scottish to be honest and I've never lived there. I'm more of an England supporter than anything, but now it's either Germany or France (because I support Arsenal).

Where in the UK are you situated?

Megaminx equivalent of a 3x3 algorithm

Ive been trying to rotate the edges of the megaminx when everything else is in place. I know how to do this on a 3x3 and want to know if I can do something similar on the megaminx. Every guide i saw so far has the person first orienting the edges and then the corners but im trying to do the reverse, since i know how to do this better.

This is what im essentially trying to do on the megaminx, obviously sometimes more than 3 edges are out of place :

its the permuting the LL edges part at the very end of the guide.

Im real new to mega, but what I am having the most trouble with is completing the first color (I do white). I have absolutely no problem actually doing the layer, but I'm just not sure what to focus on or track. I usually will identify a corner and look for the edge and get distracted by something else and switch and then loose track of either cube orientation or where the original corner was. Should I (at least at this point) just pick a corner or edge and stick with it until I find its pair or should I continue to just look around until I see both an edge and corner that can be easily placed? I know that things will all improve with practice, but where should I start?

I need some help. I watched the Anoine C beginners video. I can solve the Megaminx now. But I need the T and Y perm alg on paper since I can not do them without mussle memory (from 3X3). Is there a 2 step easier way to permute edges? I don't mind repeating a set untill all edges are permuted.

For the t perm you can use this alg instead, same effect on the edges, but much faster R2 U2 R2' U R2 U2 R2'

I prefer: [U'] R2' U2' R2 U' R2' U2' R2

Thanks for the effort guys(and gal). I do not how these algs would not mess up my Megaminx.

I mean something like this:

I do not speak a single word Japanese so I do not know what he is saying :)

You can also use a J perm for the Y perm cases, if you find that more comfortable to execute on the mega.

If you would like I could put up a video when I get home, showing the algs Lid and Waffle posted, simplified and in depth. They really are pretty easy.

@marcel: I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I learned Mega LL from Grant Tregay's site here.
I also don't speak Japanese, but that's just a modified type of Sune and it's inverse. It rotates 3 edges and should be enough to get by if you don't mind doing it a few times.

Yes, I guess all I need to know are these:

PE algs:
Rotate 3 adjacent edges clockwise (U/R -> U/BL -> U/BR):
(R+ U++) (R- U-) (R+ U- R-)
Rotate 3 adjacent edges counterclockwise (U/R ->U/BR -> U/BL):
(R+ U+) (R- U+) (R+ U-- R-)
Rotate 3 non-adjacent edges clockwise (U/R -> U/BR -> U/L):
(R+ U+) (R- U++) (R+ U++ R-)
Rotate 3 non-adjacent edges counterclockwise (U/R -> U/L -> U/BL):
(R+ U--) (R- U-) (R+ U-- R-)
Swap an adjacent pair, and a non-adjacent pair of edges (U/R <-> U/L and U/BR <-> U/BL):
(R+ U+) (R- U+) (R+ U-) (R- U++) (R+ U++ R-)

And I guess you can do that intuitively.. I wish I could find a video of that since these algs do not say how to hold the megaminx..

Sorry I don't have a video camera but the LL edges are denoted anticlockwise by <L,F,R,BR,BL> in this scheme.
Hold it like a 3x3 for LL with the F edge at the front.
