[Help Thread] Megaminx Discussion

Hey, I average around 1:35-ish and I was considering learning more PLLs. I've searched online for a while, but I haven't found any sources that I found that helpful. Any recommendations for place to find PLL cases and algs? Also, at my times, I find that getting a PLL case that I actually know (like j-perm, y-perm, et cetera) increases my times by quite a bit. My whole last layer takes about 20 seconds, with 15 of that spent on EPLL and CPLL.

Now I know Permuteramera is the main website for getting mega PLLs and such, but a LOT of the algorithms are very poor and loads of people use much better algorithms. I'm not massively interested in megaminx myself, I enjoy solving, but am not fast. However, how difficult would it be to collaborate to to recreate a similar collection of algorithms, but with the best algorithms people have found and actually use regularly. I asked MaeLSTRoM to make a list of his PLLs but I also thought, why not just make a massive and most importantly, USEFUL list?

P.S. OLLs lol

Mollerz, remind me about that, I can set up something someday :)

Without help, I solved all but the last layer when I first got one. At that time, I only knew how to do a 3x3

When I solve megaminx, my ring and pinky fingers on my left hand really hurt. Practice makes it better, right? Or am I doing something wrong?

It's very similar to what happens when you first start to practice OH. Your hand gets used to the funky angles that it has to contort to in order to hold the cube. Don't worry about it :)

I ordered a Megaminx online, still waiting for it to arrive. I definitely don't care about speed solving it. I just want to solve it. What are the odds that knowing how to complete a 2x2-5x5, I can figure out the Megaminx without any help?

Received my Mega today, and solved it today :) It took a lot of work for the LL... maybe if I knew at least OLL/PLL I might have done a better job :p My Roux CMLLs weren't terribly helpful.

I am going to get a megaminx and this will be my first one so I am a complete beginner at this event. I wanted to ask you guys what megaminx I should get, a dayan mega or a shengshou mega? Price isn't an issue and those two megas i mentioned are my only choices.

Well,I like Megaminx, however it takes over 150 secs for me to solve it,should I keep on practicing on 3x3 cubes for speeding up f2l and s2l?

if you don't have time/tools for modding: go for the dayan
if you have time/tools for modding: think about the shengshou

Ok thanks Oscar. I think ill go with the Dayan Megaminx because I am too lazy too mod it. I have another question aimed towards people who use Dayan Megaminxes, what did you do to your Mega? Just lube and tension or did you do the edge point mod to it?

Okay, so I've got a bit of in issue in my hands. Or rather, the issue is from my hands. I've been improving my thrn speed and overall lookahead, and I average about 1:25 now. My biggest problem right now is dealing with regrips.

Regripping during last layer isn't an issue for me, and the SuperF2L isn't a huge concern. But during ny star/cross and F2L, I waste so much time doing full rotations, move cancellation and moving my hands instead of being productive with my turns. I watched a video where Simond Westlund said that he likes to always turn faces, even if he hasn't found any pieces. I tried this, but after watching a bunch of his solves I ealize how rediculously fast his tps is. Has anybody else tried doing this with any luck? Did anyone else deal with regripling nonsense, or is it just me?

I'm so bent on becoming a world-class Megaminx solver, despite my meh 3x3 times.
