Ok, I got the rubiks magic around 3 days ago, learned how to solve it using a video on youtube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX2wqnCGcjQ , and am now have an average of 2.20-2.40 with a personal record of 1.99 using that method. I was just wondering, is this a good average of someone who has only had it for three days. Also, are there more advanced and faster methods that I can learn.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, I think it is alright. But just remember that it doesn't matter if your crap the first few days.

You would have to get use to the cube, lube it.
Then try learning F2L which takes out a lot of the unnecessary moves.
After that just learn some OLL and PLL. There is where I am now.

Dude you've just seen Erik's video, how much faster can another fast method be? ;) I don't know if 2.xx is good for 3 days, but I was averaging 2.5 on my first day and sub-2 by my third. Try Lucas' restringing method, helped me a lot, my times just plunged (relatively, not that there's much room for plunging when you're already 1.xx :p)

ah cool. You said try Lucas' restringing method, made your time plunge, but its a method for restringing not solving right?

 I just got a PLL skip on the Magic!!

Disclaimer: I do not own a Rubik's Magic. I am also of the opinion that the way this puzzle is currently "solved" makes it not much of a puzzle at all, and the Rubik's Magic event can easily be replaced by timed Ball in Cup event.

Magics should be scrambled, but I can't figure out a way to provide scrambles. So for now we are stuck with the A -> B way of solving.

Ball-in-Cup has lately become pretty intense:

Wow! Ball in cup is really amazing! They are much more skilled than professional basketball players!

Oh yeah, back on topic.
Magic, by current rules is just practicing of one alg. I got a sub-2 average the first hour, then I just stopped playing with it.
Arnaud, you much find a way to show the notations, then we can truly solve it!

If there was a somewhat simplistic way of notation for scrambling the Magics I think I would have found it by now. Jaap has a lot of information about it, but even he hasn't found an easy way of describing the moves other than loooots of pictures

Does anyone happen to know how many combinations are possible with a magic?

With a 2 by X magic there are X*8 ways to form a 2 by X rectangle. So for a normal magic that means 4*8=32 and for a master magic that means 6*8=48. There is a limited amount of other flat shapes and an infinite amount of non-flat shapes (2 flaps raised 1 degree, 2 flaps raised 2.0001 degree, ect)

More details about the X*8 rectangles: http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showpost.php?p=94566&postcount=9

haha lol.

All I can say is, WHOA to the ball in cup video.

Back on topic, I think I got sub-1 single within a week and a half of getting a magic. Just practice a lot.

nice, my aim is consistent sub-2 by end of week and i am almost there. You said you got sub-1 single solve within a week and a half, how long did it take you to be consistent sub 1...if your sub one.

I'm very close to sub-1 consistently. I forget how long it's been since I got my magic.

I still have a problem with getting sub-1 consistently. My timer will not show .99 or .98. So I don't know if my 1.00s were really .99 or .98. I should look into getting a new timer.

wow...I can say the ball-in-cup thingy is even cooler than I frist saw someone able to solve a cube...

Edit : I checked wikipedia and I found out that ball-in-cup is another game, this one should be called beer pong..

On my video I just show the method everyone uses. Of course I didn't invent it myself.
I remember when Alexander or Jaap showed me how to solve it at German Open I did about 3 sec avg.

Of course it's impossible to say what a good avg would be for a beginner, it's the same as asking: 'how fast should I be after 2 months of cubing'.

I learned just minutes before my first comp, like 3-5 tries and then on to the podium. The average was 16 seconds or something :)

Edit:

From WCA:

Swedish CubeDay 2006 Final 5 10.44 16.32 DNF 21.98 10.44 15.95 11.03

Edit again:

At the time it was the worst average ever for Magic but it is now beaten by:

Andreas Oppebøen 18.79 Norway Norwegian Open 2008 22.31 20.41 13.00 DNF 13.66

BTW, in the same comp my brother set the worst ever average for Pyraminx (now also broken) :p
