[Help Thread] Megaminx Discussion

Generally do you need to be a certain speed on the 3x3 to sub 1 or sub 1:15 on the mega? Can you just practice mega and get to a great time if your 3x3 time is not that good(Avg 30)?

As long as you use F2L(as in corner-edge pairs at the same time) and 4LLL, you shouldn't have a problem getting sub-2:00 while having a sup-25 3x3 avg, in my opinion. Getting sub-1:15, however, will probably require a faster 3x3 avg. But there is good news. When you practice mega, most often than not your 3x3 times will improve, and vice versa.

I have always found my 3x3 and Megaminx times to not be that much connected. I was able to get sub-2 on mega pretty easily when I was only just getting sub20 on 3x3. Now I'm at about 50 for mega, and only 13 or so for 3x3. It doesn't really matter that much, but if you want to improve mega more, it needs to have more time put into it obviously.

Thanks. So my average right now is about 30, which probably can be improved a lot(3x3). I think I want to practice mega more though so I think I will try and sub-2 for that and then see if I improve/get worse on my 3x3 times. The problem is I only know the 4LLL for the 3x3, and I want to learn some of the mega PLL's and things to make my LL faster, so I would tend to focus more on mega. Do you think this will work?

Thanks

What I'm asking is, should I go for sub 20 3x3 first? It might be worth my time to get decent at 3x3. What do you guys think?

Hey guys,

I have my Dayan meg. for awhile now. All is fine except the fact that corner ridges rattle a bit..
My tentions are fairly tight - does this happen to your puzzle?

Is there any significant difference between solves that are solved mainly in your hands vs. mainly on a surface? I average sub-2 and it seems easier to control the megaminx when it is resting on a surface for a majority of the solve. Record holders, however, seem to hold the megaminx in their hands for a majority of the solve and only put it down towards the end of the solve to increase LL speed. Why do they do this? Of course, if you can get better lookahead in the long run by solving it in your hands, I'd rather kill my bad habits now rather than later. Help?

I average about 3ish minutes for megaminx, and I realize that is very slow. I globally average about 20 seconds for 3x3 btw. My biggest problem with megaminx is that I spend about 50% of my time trying to find pieces, 25% solving them incorrectly, and the other 25% actually accomplishing something.

Are there any techniques I could use to practice megaminx more efficiently and to improve lookahead?

Slow solves, watching walkthroughs, and practice! :)

Do you have a set order in which to solve?
I'm pretty slow on mega, and I don't practice it often but I recall I got a jump in times when I got used to the colour scheme and knew what I was going to be looking for next.

I ordered a Megaminx online, still waiting for it to arrive. I definitely don't care about speed solving it. I just want to solve it. What are the odds that knowing how to complete a 2x2-5x5, I can figure out the Megaminx without any help?
