Do you improve at a steady pace or in big jumps?

So... How do you get faster/improve? No.. I'm not meaning by practicing and drill algs and stuff.

I want to know how do you get faster like let's say your stuck at that sub 20, 15, 12, 10 barrier. Do you slowly get past that barrier or do you just jump a sec? And what do you think cause that. Like what made it so you jumped a sec instead of slowly increased? And same with what did you do to slowly improve instead of jumping a sec.

Yeah. I heard that too. Do you time yourself most of the times you do or just untime?
That mostly likely comes into play

I think sometimes there is a jump because say you are stuck at a barrier and it's because you can only look ahead or track the next pair at the insert stage of each F2L pair but then suddenly it clicks and you can track the next pair as soon as you figure out the current case. Maybe another barrier would be moving from simply tracking the next pair at the start of the current pair and being able to predict what the next case will be. So you jump because when it clicks, you might become 0.3 secs faster at each pair because that's how much pause you eliminate and each pair is like that so you suddenly jump a second. This is my theory on jumps. (It could also be knowing how to find your first pair while doing cross.) I don't think LL improvement will jump like this.

Nice comment sneaklyfox. I'm sure that is right. How do you think the last layer improvements happen?

A storebought. I was using a rubik's brand when I was averaging 36 seconds. Now I'm using a zhanchi which helped me cut another few seconds.

Ah, When i hear it's the cuber not the cube that's not right at all. The cube and cuber makes the times.

It really depends on the barrier. Getting under on minute can be done in a very short amount of time, while sub-20, sub-15, and sub-10 can take a much longer amount of time.

Those were basically the barriers I could break with ease XD sub 20>sub16>sub 15>sub 14>sub 13>sub 12. Now I average 10.7 - 11.2 and I just can't get any faster by doing solves over and over again like I have been all this time.

I was at sub 12 for years, then i got a second job and didn't practice all that much and was at sub 15. I recently got half bright stickers and now I'm getting a lot of sub 10 solves. So it kinda depends with me, sometimes yes and sometimes no.

Oh, really? Not trying to really get off topic hear but I'm just getting to sub 16. Any major tips?
I'm doing mostly time solves and have done at least 150 solve each day. The past week I was doing 300 to 400 and that's how I dropped 2.5 sec in a week. :) Lol.
Look at the solve critique thread I have a 15.24 average which was awesome!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Cubing is weird. When you try to think of it as a math thing (like breaking down your solves) it just doesn't make sense sometimes. You just have to go with the flow!

I improve in big jumps usually because of the way I practice. Usually I only have time to do one or two actual cubing session in a week. If I focus on an event and have more practice sessions I can take big leaps. For instance, with 4x4, in 3 days I went from averaging 62 to 52, with megaminx, in 4 days I went from 1:45 to 1:20.

Oh I see. I guess I haven't told you guys how I improve but normally I improve slowly because I do mostly timed solves. Like I was about 19.5 then 19 and drop half a second and a forth a sec at a time. But I do get in the "zone" a lot and jump a sec or even 2!

Awesomecuber id advise you to do a lot of untimed slow solves. Play with the cube a little bit. There are alot of f2l cases that you might think you're doing fast, but there might be a faster way. I've been cubing for five years and to this day am still finding faster ways to execute f2l pairs.

It shouldn't take long to find the most optimal but at the same most fingertrickable alg for F2L pairs. What is more important on 3x3 is looking ahead to plan your solve before you get to that part and finding ways to influence your solve to make it faster.

Steady pace improvement to session averages, I seem to get a PB session 3 times a week or so.
but my average of 5 and 12 seem to break suddenly when i happen to string a bunch of good solves together. pretty rare compared to session averages.

i used to improve at mind-numbingly big jumps. as in i would improve at the same rate as i should have been, but i would stay in the same place for like a week before seeing any slight change at all. this was when my session averages were about 19, 18, 17 (mostly) but continued all the way to sub-14. now it's steadier.
