Do you improve at a steady pace or in big jumps?

I got sub-20 in 2 months but then i progressed a lot slower: I am low 12-high11 and ive been cubing for 10 months

For 5x5 I've been improving pretty well, despite very sparse practice. I'm getting sub90s almost effortlessly nowadays. Whereas for megaminx I'm still stuck at where I was 2 1/2 years ago, quite literally :p

Awesomecuber id advise you to do a lot of untimed slow solves. Play with the cube a little bit. There are alot of f2l cases that you might think you're doing fast, but there might be a faster way. I've been cubing for five years and to this day am still finding faster ways to execute f2l pairs.

Well don't get me wrong I do untimed but if I were to compare the two. Untimed to timed then it would be like a 1 to 4 ratio. So if I do 100 timed I do like 25 untimed

jumps for me, but i guess thats a psychological thingy and has nothign to do with how you improve or what barriers there are. also i improve much faster when im not timing myself and only doing slow solves, so after such a phase when i start timing again i always have a "jump"

Here's what happened to me.First I was having 1 min averages.Suddenly I did a 58 sec solve. Then I was stuck at 1:o5 sec for another couple of days.Went to a competition and had a 1 min solve .Then I gradually started to get regular 50 to 1 min solves. Then I quite quickly started having 45 seconds, and very frequent 42 seconds.I took a big gap of 9 to 10 months.Started again just 5 months ago.I again started having 55 second solves.I again suddenly did a 34 second solve and then a 22 second solve[PLL skip,if I remember right].Over the next month I got to sub 30.And then I went to a competition again and had a 34 second solve. But from then on,I could easily do under 30 second solves. Then I ,for a short amount of time was within 23 to 27 seconds. Then ,I had a 19 second solve, but my brother pointed out to me that 2 seconds needed to be added as there was still a move left. But I gradually had 20 to 25 second solves ,and am now currently averaging 22 or less. But I have been getting below 20 seconds solve recently, and that has happened quite quickly, just because I realized I wasn't trying to suppress my motor attention properly.
So, it mainly depends on what barrier you are stuck at.I got through the 55,45,30 second barriers quite quickly, but struggled to get past the 23 one.

The average of the ~30 first OH solves I did today was faster than my previous PB Ao12. Then my times went back to normal because my hand started to hurt.

I guess that's a jump in improvement.

I used to jump loads at a time. I was stuck at 32 for ages, then within week of my first sub 30 adv 12, i had a sub 25 adv 5. Then all of a sudden i hit 24 seconds consistently. I think when it comes to these 'slow' time, a lot of it is in your head, you can be sub 25, and still make a lot of mistakes. But since i broke the sub 20 barrier some 6-7 moths ago, i have only improved very very steadily, and sometimes getting slower at periods. I now sit at the high 17's Ao100, and have been for a while. Mainly because, and sneakyfox hinted at it, my LL is what slows me down, and improvements in LL do not come quickly, or without effort. And i just havent put in the dedicated practice to my LL.

WOOHOO! I am "in the zone" today. Just beat my PB Ao5 by 0.8 and Ao12 by almost a full second!!!

What! I'm so jelly! Sub 15 average of 12 and sub 14 average of 5! Have you been practicing 2H more? Like holy crap.

HAHAHA... Same with me! I have better f2l than her but my LL slows me down but I guess today she make a JUMP!

EDIT: I just broke 3 Pb's! Average of 5, 12 and 100!

Yeah, I was rather elated about that. Nope, haven't practiced much 2H. Lately I've been pyraminxing...

As long as I am getting better, you will because you're so competitive! :p

I think LL improvements are usually gradual. Probably training algs over and over again will help that. I'm not sure how effective time attacks are. I kind of think it's better just to work on one and do it several hundred times at a time or something. But honestly I haven't done any kind of training for LL for a really long time, like since I was learning the algs at first. I only practice them because they're a part of the normal solves I do. I probably should do some training. My fingers get a bit locky on some of them such as ccw U-perm which is one of the easiest ones. I much too often get a stutter on it.

Haha, yeah. I will pass you someday! I don't think I could do time attacks just because I would forget what order to do them and what algs to do. I think for me I'll just use cstimer last layer scrambles just to practice last layer.
