[Help Thread] Square-1 Discussion

Does anyone know how to prevent popping on the Calvin Square-1? I recently got it for Christmas, lubed it up, turns smoothly on all sides and / but when I try to quickly do the edge parity alg, I easily get pops all over the place.

All I can say is, turn accurately. There isn't a fantastically good square-1 out there that is good and doesn't pop. If you want, you could take the spring and washer out, and that would minimize popping, but the cube becomes very loose and you have to tighten it once in a while. I did this for about a few months and the cube felt so weird that I put the spring back in. I do not suggest doing that. Practice will help you turn much more accurately.

Several questions:
1. Which is better: Parity EP or Parity CP?
2. I saw bb1's ep tutorial. When should I learn this?
3. Also anyone thinking about sub-20 guide (see earlier post)?

1. parity cp- takes a while to recognize but there are only 9 algs
parity ep- 50 algs, all a pain

I would say go with parity cp, it'll be better for you in the end. You might notice your times will go up for a little while, but just like fridrich f2l, it'll get faster. I'm just learning all ep's cuz i'm silly :P

2. Wait I had an ep tutorial? r u referring to this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACUdoU4xjek or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0joCviTxT8M
For the first one, just learn them. they'll come in handy when you're solving, although the probability that they'll show up by themselves is quite low.
For the second one, it's pretty much intuitive. Just do what seems logical.

I would also HIGHLY suggest that if you don't learn all parity cp's at once and practice in the middle, LEARN THE UPERM-ADJ ALGS. This includes ccwU-Adj, CwU-Adj, Adj-Ccwu, and Adj-CwU. Try to find a good alg for those, even I am still looking for a good one.

3. (2:00+)
Just getting started eh? Start by getting used to your puzzle. The Square-1 is a very different puzzle to the 3x3, so it will take a little while. Also, plan your entire cubeshape during inspection.
(1:30-1:00)
Cool, you're a bit faster. You should learn a little more EO's (refer to my above post #163). Also, by now, you should know the adj-adj swap for ep and opp-opp, as well as a fast parity alg. Learn to perform this alg fast.
(1:00-45)
Congrats, below a minute! Learn all of the CP's. Also learn the algs for the following cubeshapes: shield-shield, shield-square, similar fists, and kite-square
(45-30)
This might be the most brutal part of the guide. It's heavy alg-learning
-Learn advanced cubeshape. There are some great tutorials out there. You can find my tutorial here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ3KzTwitLI
-At this point, you should know all CP's and EO's. Start learning more EP algs. I suggest you start learning the shorter ones first, as learning those will cut down your times. Also, learn any cases that bother you a lot. (For me, at least, it's Z-Opp until I learned an alg for it)
-Watch my video on preserving blocks during CP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0joCviTxT8M
-[OPTIONAL] Learn Parity CP. This will cut down on the number of EP parity algs you have to learn.
(30-20)
You're almost there! Now, once you get the hang of advanced cubeshape, learn optimal cubeshape for certain cases. For example, shield-fist is a great case for the advanced cubeshape method (6 twists can be planned out instantly) but there is a 5-twist optimal solution to it. Unusually, I learned many optimal cubeshapes from Mike Hughey's Square-1 BLD site, where he has a complete list of most cubeshapes (you will need to figure out the mirrors yourself) skarrie.se/square1blind
Keep practicing and learning EP's!
(sub-20)
Congrats, you're sub-20! There's nothing much I can say for this, only learn more useful algs and EP's. Keep square'n!

Thanks so much, brandbest1. I was referring to the first video. I definitely need to find a fast parity alg. I use Andrew Nelson's alg before cp but I think I am going to learn the adj ep.
What cp algs do you suggest for beginners to learn?

heres what i would say

45+
learn how to solve a square 1: M2, J-J, adj, adj-adj, and single swap

35-45
learn the eos, cps, and start learning some basic eps

25-35
learn cubeshape, if your going to do parity cp learn it, continue learning eps

25-
continue learning eps, practice, turn fast

About this, there is only J-J for corners. What if you had a J-solved for Y-J? How would do that?

I would like to but I don't know how. I hear you need a YouTube which I can't get. Is there another way?

If you don't mind, you could send it to one of us (e.g. me, andrew, simon, etc) via email and wetransfer.com and they could help you. I don't mind if you email it to me, I could even upload it to my youtube channel as unlisted and specifically post it here.

Square-1 EP and CP together?

Hi everyone, I'm new here and I don't know if this is the right section to ask my question.
Time ago I found out a page for the square-1 where there were written all square-1's algorithms that permute corners and edges in the same layer at the same time, with only one algorithm instead of 2, like PLLs on the 3x3; but now I can't find it.
Does anyone know it or know that method?

I think you might be thinking of the Jason Baum method.
To me it seems that the site is down.

EDIT:

here is a thread about it:

http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?13410-Need-Full-PLLs-for-Square-1-Baum-Method

Scroll down and Swordsman Kirby makes a list!

Also I have the whole PLL/PPLL list myself, if you want me to I could send it to you.

The first link doesn't work.
In the second one I found the algorithms, but I will try them later; now I'm a little busy.

Can you also sent me your list?
