[Help Thread] 2 look discussion - OLL and PLL

don't listen to the above post. y rotations in LL are just dumb most of the time; just turn the U layer

EDIT: just realized that he did a 4-week bump....um...

that's why i said usually.... and why does everyone think i'm a boy?
i'm working on learning full PLL but since there's school, i can't. i only know h perm, z perm, t perm, a perm, and u perm.

2-look PLL - do I need full PLL?

I have learned 2 Look OLL and 2 Look PLL, and so it's time to move onto learning Full PLL (I am led to believe that full OLL should come later when I am much faster).

However, I've been looking at the algorithms and noticed, with the T perm, that I have never come across this arrangement of cubies before. So my question is: are there any full PLL algorithms that don't need to be learned because they never appear when performing 2 Look OLL?

TIA

Just realised I've made a mistake in the title.. It should read 2-look OLL - do I need full PLL?
---------------

Perhaps I should look more closely at the patterns when I'm solving... maybe I WILL spot a T perm. Thanks - I'll try to learn them all.

I am in the procces of learning full PLL. I am around 24ish seconds with 2-look-OLL and on many (not most) cases 2-lool-PLL. I understand how full OLL can make you faster but only by a little bit, and there are so many to learn. I plan on learning full PLL, and algorithmic F2L before I begin to learn full OLL

you might as well, you don't "have to", but you might as well
i thought i'd never have to do Y-perms ever again after i learned COLL, then OLL skips laughed at me :|

Yes, all cases can occur with 2 look OLL.

Incase your wondering, I've just done a 4LLL ao12 using standard 2 look oll, and for PLL I'm just doing CP using J-perm or y-perm, and then doing EPLL.

31.85, 26.87, 26.16, 28.06, 29.83, 31.74, 28.42, 24.68, 21.08, 26.02, 31.11, 29.37
number of times: 12/12
best time: 21.08
worst time: 31.85

best mo3: 23.93 (σ = 2.55)
best avg5: 26.37 (σ = 1.89)
best avg12: 28.23 (σ = 2.31)
session avg: 28.23 (σ = 2.31)
session mean: 27.93

So everyone says that you need OLL and PLL to get sub30, and I remember that phase when I was around a minute with 4LLL, but it's definitely possible to get sub30 even with that. I'm sure some people can get sub20 even. I know you've heard this a ton, but the important part is F2L.
10.52, 12.21, 10.87, 10.66, 10.48 <-- F2L ao5 = 10.68.

ignore the crazy guy above :P

I use 3LLL, I began learning PLL's at around 55 seconds and finished them around 40 seconds, at first they will be hard to learn but your times will speed up, not just by learning them, but by the practice and solves you put in while you learn them. I'm trying to get sub-20 now before I learn full OLL.

All though shouting Roux have stirred my interest. I've looked at sites like Waffle's, and I will have a try... one day.

Really, I have tried, but my block building is laughable. Once I am comfortable sub 60 with CFOP, then I'll entertain the idea of learning another method. I can, with supreme slowness build the block and orient the corners, after that I flounder.

If you don't like blockbuilding, but you want to try it, ZZ may be a good option. It's a little like CFOP (especially the last layer, except EO is already done).

I have completed full PLL and I'm not finished yet with full OLL, I usually skipped cases which are mostly hard to memorize/execute (yes, i'm too laaaazy). I think I only memorized around 42 out of 57 cases and still get good times.

Roux is really fun. Ofc, different people will prefer different methods and be better at some methods than at others (I prefer ZZ and Roux to CFOP, but average 23 with CFOP and 27 with roux and ZZ). Block building is really weird to get the hang of at first, but once you start to learn some tricks and put all of your CFOP-y algorithmic stuff behind you, it's reallllyyy fun and easy.

Take this scramble for example:
F2 R' B2 R F2 U2 L D2 F2 L' U2 B' F2 R' D U R2 B' D F2 U
(scramble white top, green front)
As a beginner, I'm not sure what I would see if I were doing roux. I would probably go for the white-green-red-orange block. What I see now, as a more experienced block builder (and I'm not all that great, I'm sure panda could do a lot better) is the yellow-orange-green-blue block. I'd do
y'
L' U L' F U2 F' (D u) // (8, 8)
U2 R2' U' R U r' U' r U' R M U' R U2 R' U' R U r' // (19, 27) (My SB stinks...)
U2 F R U R' U' R U R' U' F' // (11, 38)
U M' U M' U M' U M' U2 M U' M2 U' M U2 M' U2 M2 // (18, 56)

You should definitely try out all the big 4 methods (CFOP, Petrus, ZZ, roux) for a lot of solves (maybe 100 each at the start) and see which one you like best. Then pick that and stick with it :)
good luck!

or in a zz speedsolve:

B' U' R2 L' F B2 D2 (eoline 7)
U L' U L U R U R2 U' R (right side 10)
L U' L U2 L' U' L U L' (left square)
U L' U' L U2 L' U L (left pair 17)
R' U R U2 R' L' U R U' L (finish 10)
